RDR2 Achieves Entertainment's Biggest Opening Weekend of All Time ($725m)

Forums - Sales Discussion - RDR2 Achieves Entertainment's Biggest Opening Weekend of All Time ($725m)

Rockstar Games® is proud to announce that the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 has achieved the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment*. With over $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time next to Rockstar Games' previously released title, Grand Theft Auto V, which achieved over $1 billion in retail sell-through in three days.*

Red Dead Redemption 2's list of initial benchmarks include:

  • Biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
  • Second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
  • Biggest entertainment launch of 2018;
  • Most pre-ordered full game ever on PlayStation Network;
  • Biggest day one full game sales ever on PlayStation Network;
  • Biggest first three days full game sales ever on PlayStation Network.
These numbers for sure include digital.
*Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on a Friday so that its ‘opening weekend’ (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) is the same as its first three days, while Grand Theft Auto V launched on a Tuesday.

as written they talk about retail sell through. So that means consumers worldwide paid 725m dollars towards the physical release.

That would probably equal around 10m copies for first weekend excluding digital copies.

I do believe infinity war would have had a higher amount of the Chinese release date was the same. I think now it was around 700m first weekend and with China around 850m

PS4 will sell 25 million units before 31st of March!

Edit: I didn't state what year! HAHA, so I'm still right in some sense

If 725M is only physical, why they don't count digital too, it must be at least 25-30% of the sales!!

That's an incredible milestone for both Rockstar and the VG industry as a whole.
Kinda off-topic but I wonder how they can't translate financial success into decent work conditions.

It seems is digital too, but we can't know for certain. This PR is Microsoft levels of bullshit, with the "biggest weekend launch ever" but not the biggest 3 days launch ever (because is still GTA V) and with this nonsense of saying retail sales through but naming PSN sales success too without claryfing if the 725M counts everything.

Oghh...why do this?

Some statements are confusing me. Like doesn't GTA V have the biggest launch actually ? Weekend-launch wise yeah but their PR makes it sounds like they beat everything.

Do they count PSN in the numbers ? They do mention it quite a lot.

Insane. Great to see it smash those psn records too. I'd love to know the digital ratio
