^ Blu-Ray XL will have 125GB discs.... so it might not be needed for most games, next gen.

Problem is they are just as expensive, if not more expensive, than the 64 and 32 gig Switch carts.  You see what happened there.  Expect more partial  download installs coming to Sony and MS now, or multi disk games.  In the end, it is whichever is cheaper.  It is the partial downloads

Huh? cant remember where but I think I read it was like ~6-7p to stamp a blu-ray disc, and like a few dollars to make a Cartridge for the Switch.

Even if Blu-ray XL turns out to cost more to make than a normal bluray disc, it ll still be much cheaper than cartridges.
Shiken I think your wrong about disc that are mass produced and stamped costing as much as a cartidge.

I haven't heard any conclusive information on this topic, but I'm under the impression that Blu-Ray disks are much cheaper than Switch cartridges, which would explain why many Switch games are at a $5 mark-up. And during the PS1-era, I recall hearing that CDs were just pennies to make, and DVDs were more expensive, and that's why many PC games came with 4 CD-ROMs instead of 1 DVD data disk. (Either that or they figured not everyone had a DVD drive?)

I wouldn't've guessed Blu-Ray was down to just 7 cents yet, as I assumed there was some sort of licensing fee to use that format, and since it's still the preferred format, Sony is able to increase that price.

Edit:

"Greenwald says that each DVD costs about US$2,000 to master and another buck to manufacture the actual disk. In contrast, Greenwald says high-definition mastering costs for Blu-ray will run close to US$40,000 per title with a pressing cost of US$2.00 per Blu-ray disc."

I just did a price comparison for what a single blu ray XL costs vs a 32 gig Switch cart (which no dev wants to use)  and the difference came out to being less than a dollar.

Google it and check the math for yourself if you do not believe me, but they are damn close.

How long has it been since this happened the last time on a Playstation console? I only remember this with Final Fantasy VII.

You know that manufactures that stamp blu-rays do it at a fraction of the cost, of say you buying a bluray you can burn yourself right?
You cant use the amazon price of a writeable blu ray to compair, its not the same as what manufactures use or pay for it.

Lots of PS1 games required multiple disks. There were also a few on PS2 and Gamecube. I'm not sure if it's happened since the PS3/Wii/360 era, although I'm sure there are some obscure titles that used multiple disks.

That was just some off the sleeve math for the sake of example.  I have heard from multiple places that the cost is similar, but they are not reliable enough to post and I cannot find any raw data on the matter.

However, you still have to ask where exactly the line is.  Even if it is a little less than a Switch cart, it boils down to what the dev is willing to pay.

Right now theres only 32GB cartridges for the Switch right? Nintendo pushed back 64GB ones until 2019.
And you see developers useing the 16GB ones and forceing people to download like half the game to play it (to save on cartridge costs)

If it was so little a differnce, I dont think developers would act this way.

"Gadgets360 reports that in Japan, Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2 costs 1,000 yen more on the Nintendo Switch than on the PS4 because it ships on a larger 32GB cartridge (most Switch games come on 8GB or 16GB cartridges.)"

1000 yen, is about 9$ USD.
So a 32GB cartridge is about 9$ "MORE" than a PS4 Blu-ray Disc.
64GB cartridge the differnce will be even bigger.

"For those who always ask why, blame the price of game carts that Nintendo charge to publishers.

32GB carts are ridiculously expensive."

^ Zhuge says reasons Switch version often cost more is the cartridge costs, which he deems "ridiculously expensive".

He wouldnt use words like that if they cost almost the same as a blu-ray.
