Forums - Gaming Discussion - Persona Q2's existence just baffles me

And what's this about a global reputation for JRPGs? Switch hasn't come close to having that reputation yet. I would hope that Atlus/Sega does indeed port Q2 to Switch so that it has a better chance of being successful.

Look at sales of JRPGs that released both on PS4 and Switch. The Switch SKU often equals or surpasses sales of PS4 SKU - even if its a late port (Disgaea 5, Yvs VIII).

Look at the explosive success of Octopath Traveler and the tidal wave of FF games Square's bringing to that platform now.

Look at the support Monolith Soft has given to the platform already. Xenoblade 2 itself is already near 2 million sold.

We get Fire Emblem, Pokemon, SMTV, DQ11 and Town in the year ahead as well.

Overall, the JRPG market on Switch is clearly booming.

It's definitely taking a little longer than I expected for Switch to become the "RPG machine" like a lot of people acted like it already was. That being said, I think 2 years for Japanese RPG support to ramp up is probably pretty normal. Plus, n ext year will be great (if DQ11 and SMTV actually come out)

Up until the first Persona Q, Persona itself has largely been a Playstation exclusive franchise. At the time it was released - Persona Q's existence made sense. Expand the franchise with a spin-off to reach a new, broader audience available on 3DS without compromising the value of Sony's excluvity of P4G on Vita and P5 on PS4 and PS3.

And now - there's Persona Q2, a spin off of Persona 5, on 3DS in 2018. And the obvious fact is... Persona Q2 won't really help grow the franchise in the ways Persona Q and Persona 5 obviously did. If anything, Persona Q2 is a fan-service game and due to to its timing on 3DS will likely sell poorly. Sure, the COMG chart shows the game trending well but I won't be surprised if sales drop like a rock after that. And beyond that, it's questionable we'd every see Q2 in the west due to the amount of time it will take to localize.

So here's what I've concluded....

Persona Q's Nintendo exclusivity makes no sense any longer. Bring it to Playstation where you now have more fans because of P5. Many Playstation fans would be happy with that.

And given the Nintendo Switch's global reputation for JRPGs, it also makes sense to bring Persona Q2 and even Persona 5 (+potentially other mainline Persona) to Switch.

Heck, put it all these games on Xbox and PC for that matter too.

This whole series is too good and has too much potential to be shackled to one platform at a time per entry.

If 3DS is the only platform Persona Q2 ever comes to, I'll maybe still get it. But I'll be kind of annoyed by it at this point.

How many of you agree?

The reason is pretty simple, when Atlus decided to milk Persona for all it was worth with Fighting and dancing games after the success of P4 and especially P4 Golden, that then lead to the idea of Eterian Odyssey being the perfect platform for a cheap Persona offshoot, so Persona Q was born simply as part of that milking process and Persona Q  and the other mentioned titles getting sequels, is just a sign that mixing cheap to make genre's with a brand on the rise like Persona  made money .

Where they go from now with the switch now in play is where it gets the interesting,  my feeling is initially anyway they will continue with the existing  Persona /SMT division, but PQ should follow what is likely to become an ever increasing trend of 3Ds series migrating fulltime to switch, that leaves us with the question of will they port the 3DS games or start a new.

I think you misread the intentions of Persona Q. They just wanted to have something similar to the games they were already making for Nintendo handhelds, but to see how much of their fanbase was on the platform. I've never heard anyone suggest that PQ/PQ2 were ever attempts to grow their fanbase. If they wanted to do that, they wouldn't have made them first person dungeon crawlers.

And what's this about a global reputation for JRPGs? Switch hasn't come close to having that reputation yet. I would hope that Atlus/Sega does indeed port Q2 to Switch so that it has a better chance of being successful.

I agree that that it was never about Nintendo perse,  but in my eyes more to do with milking and the 3DS with Etrian Odyssey was the perfect platform for a cheap Persona offshoot just like they had identified  fighting and dancing genres to be a quick and cheap way to exploit Persona's rise as a brand, and in their eyes besides the money, and it always leads to money ,generate even more brand awareness, but the downside is overexploitation  can cheapen the very brand your trying to grow.

Maybe the easier solution would be to bring Q2 to the Switch and later(or before) Persona 5?Makes more sense that way if the point is to expand the userbase.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Looks like I’m the only Persona fan on this site eagerly waiting to get this game without any qualms about the platform in question.

Disgaea 5 was a resounding success in the West. It completely bombed in Japan (20k PS4 vs 5k SW). Ys 8 hasn't surpassed PS4 yet, but it did have a better opening month in West (again, not the case in Japan where it did less than 1/4 of the PS4 version).

Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade 2 were both very successful, but that's kinda where it ends. The Switch hasn't had the quantity of releases to claim any sort of great reputation as it doesn't have a better library than any competing console. There's a lot of reason to be optimistic, especially as Vita's market shifts more to Switch, but that potential hasn't quite been realized yet.

Have you played the first persona Q or any other Etrian Odyssey game before? If so, could you imagine having to pause the game to draw the dungeon map using a joystick on ps4 since you wouldn't be able to do so on the fly? Or with your fingers in the switch's portable mode?

Let's face it, the series was born and will surely die exclusively for the DS line of systems.

Bring SMTIV,IVA,ST and V to ps4 in exchange, right?

I used to think this way, but then the EO teaser trailer showed up.

Never say never, Etrian Odyssey will live on!

Yes, I agree.

That said I dont mind getting it for the 3DS in its last swan song.
