Forums - Gaming Discussion - Fan remasters that are as good or better than official ones

Oops almost forgot to reply to this.

And I didn't say you didn't have the complaints, I said people didn't vocalize them. Although obviously I'm exaggerating with "no-one", lol, because there's always going to be people who do say negative things about a game. But I definitely think that video changed perception for the worse, whether it was because fans could actually speak out finally or if it was because people's minds changed, who knows.

Anyways, I'd rather play both versions of myself to see but ... ya know ... Nintendo might not ever release the original again D:

It's likely both things tbh, 3 years is enough time to let things settle and make you a bit more critical when looking back.

As for a re-release of the original, I don't think it's impossible at all unless they never add N64 games to the Switch, either through the online or a proper VC. They released MM on the Wii U in 2016 even though the remake released just a year before.

They are not remasters, but Thief fan missions, some of them are truly amazing, there have been several hundreds of them released over the last 20 years and are still actively made. For me it started with Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age, it was a very ambitious and lengthy fan project that was released in mid 2000s. Some of the fans are so talented that the original Thief games now look almost amateurish.

Also Unreal saw a big fan project released in Operation NaPali in 2007. Unreal had lots of fan maps and campaigns too but the community was much smaller and is almost dead now unlike Thief.

I have played a lot of fan made content for other games too like Deus Ex, Max Payne, Half-Life, Heroes of Might and Magic 2&3. It is one of the things that sets PC gaming apart

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

You gotta have some serious free time on your hands to do a remaster of a big video game without getting paid. I can't even imagine how much time the dude in the video in the OP put into this texture work alone.

On another matter, the guy should have had somebody else do the voice work for this video. He does not have a good voice for narration.

It is one of the main reasons that I'm considering getting into PC gaming.  I've played on consoles my whole life, and I like the plug-and-play nature.  But, I bought a computer several months ago for design work that could also be used as a decent gaming rig.  Sometime soon, I'm gonna have to dip my toes in.

Usually these things are made by a group of people, but even then it's always a lot of work. It makes these HD textures all the more impressive since it's just one guy doing it and it's clear that he's very passionate about it because it shows in the quality of the textures. He really should get a job as a texture artist somewhere =P

They are by their very nature. Because fans want something to be good while companies want things to be just good enough.
