Hi all, just an opinion from you guys….I’m quite into tech gadgets and all and follow the industry quite a bit.  In regards to most recent laptops, smartphones, tablets and other 2 in 1 devices I notice that the USBC adoption is increasing on these devices. People tend to talk this up as the way of the future.  At the same time however whilst adoption has increased there has been a surge in consumers requiring USB C to A adapters, chords, dongles and the like and with this there seems to be quite a bit of frustration among consumers . Funnily, Apple being one of the first to adopt USB C for their Mac line of products seems to have caused a fair bit of frustration and backlash with their user base.  Conversely Microsoft has just launched the next generation of Surface Hardware (Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2) with just USB A ports, meaning that their users will also need to purchase dongles and adapters for those with USB C devices. And this seems to be pissing off just as many potential consumers who want USB C portability.  Oddly though, they introduced the USB C for just a couple of their devices released in the last 12 months such as for the Surface Book 2 and Surface Go. – So what’s with the confusing strategy there?? Are they having a 2 way bet?? Also some of the premium phone makers are going exclusively with USB C such as Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel.  So having said all that is the USB C a must for current releases of phones, tablets and computers or is it just another attempt by the industry to divide and confuse the market thus making them spend more money on work around gadgets like adapters, plugs and connectors? Personally I don’t think it as big a deal as the adapter/ dongle solution is and always will be there, but that just adds to the cost of what already are premium products in many cases I guess.

What do you guys think? USB A or USB C or Meh?? Would it make or break your decision to buy your next phone/tablet/laptop product?

The future is always changing. USB-C is the next decade, maybe. Then we'll get to whine about adapters for the next thing for a while.

I got a new laptop recently and I made sure it had both USB-C and USB-A ports.

Apple was a bit early to the party when they completely ditched USB 3.1 in favor of USB-C, but yes, within time Type C will become the new universal standard. while all previous USB enhancements have simply focused on increasing data speeds, Type C is more of a complete technical overhaul, and while a lot of it is super sophisticated computer terms, heres just a general breakdown of the advantages USB-C has over the standard USB 3.1

-the Type C header is symmetrical so you wont have to stumble trying to actually plug it into the port
-Type C is able to simultaneously handle charging and data transfers. USB was originally only built to handle one at a time, meaning devices would either have to sacrifice data speed in order to supply the device with power, or require external power sources. Type C is able to do both at the same time with no throttling at all
-Type C uses a more unified architecture that can swap between different functions such as HDMI, audio, or the already stated charging and data transfer cable. it basically presents to opportunity to have all devices run through a single connector type. or to put it more simply, your phone charger could also be used to charge your laptop
-Type C is formatted for a higher power draw, allowing charging speeds to be 10x faster than standard USB charging

there is adapters for everything, on a device with just one port the chances are higher end stuff might try to strive for usbc just to allow it to charge faster than other models, but outside of that, stuff like PC's you're still going to have traditional USB ports for the least 20 years at least, I mean... fuck it most motherboards today still will have a PS/2 port on them,



That port was first introduced back in 1987, it's 31 years old, used by very few devices but it has some advantages over usb in terms of its connection to the BIOS of older machines in particular.

I'm just saying.... I wouldn't predict seeing a PC without a standard size USB port on it at least in the next 2 decades... I'll be 55 by then, and likely not give a rats anymore :D

As for if the ports on a device would be a factor in buying it.... would really depend on the device, if it was a laptop I would always check the amount of I/O that it had and the types yes, I wouldn't buy a system which didn't have enough ports... that said I wouldn't avoid a system if it didn't natively have a particular port which I might not use, I would know that there is an adapter out there for pretty much everything so it wouldn't matter too much in the end.

Same thing applies at times there... if you are just more careful and push it in slowly the first time it'll go in okay! Just make sure you ... Safely remove hardware when you're finished... if... you know what I mean.

The future is this.

USB-C is a pretty good standard, I have no idea why it's taking so long to be implemented in non-chinese phones tbh.
It charges pretty fast, data speed is dream like and the symmetrical header should be a standard in any type of plugs, can't do without it now.

If it's the future, I'd like phones to come with 2 USB-C ports so I can charge and listen to music at the same time and maybe drive an external display.
