It seems Sony has updated a patent they have posted in March which might hint at backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 5.

Here's a summary for the patent named "Remastering by emulation":

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

Personally, I don't think this kind of emulation will be similar to the kind performed on the actuality. It might be a new breed of emulation, but that's just me.

...only to take it out some time later. I don't trust them with BC.

Maybe, but I can't see them offering a service like that for free, unless they're losing the race.

i can totaly see than doing BC whit all PS consoles, except PS3.

Well I think it is either for a ubscription model like PS Now or for something like the PS Classic.

Yes, BC with all, including PS3.

just copy Microsoft and do it their way. I'm down with that.

This is very interesting. It seems like B/C, but it's also a system where devs can create higher res assets for those older games and have them effortlessly placed into the game. So, I wonder if they'll set it up where B/C is free, but can drop a couple of bucks for a hi-res pack. I'd be game for that.

That would be great. This, coupled with finally allowing crossplay, letting us download ps now games, and the heavily rumored name changes, proves that they have a good idea of what the fans want. They certainly are proving by doubts wrong.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

So basically, they are looking to run the original, unaltered code, but inject higher quality assets using their emulation program. Sounds just like the way they plan on implementing Trophies in old titles.

As I mentioned in the PS Classic thread. I won't spend a Dime on an extra peice of plastic to play classics on. If they do this though, I could easily come up with 100 PS1 games I would pay $9.99 a pop for.

Hopefully, the PS5 family of products will all be fully B/C with PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, PSV, PS4, and PSVR.
