Forums - Gaming Discussion - I don't understand (Shadow of the Tomb Raider)

I think another reason why people are annoyed by this game is because the origin story is dragging on too much. Tired of hearing ''Help her become the tomb raider shes destined to be'' in every single game tag line.

What's so hard to understand about it? Square-Enix had betrayed Sony with Rise of the Tomb Raider and that wasn't going to be forgiven quickly.

So gamers are more interested in revenge boycotting rather than playing good games? Sounds weird to me.

OP - SotTR is a great game. I just finished it afew weeks ago. Its definilty underated in my book. Also looks incredible on the X.

I played the 2013 reboot and even though I can't say that it's a bad game, it just didn't click at all. It feels like a copy of Uncharted, but without any spirit in it, and it just doesn't work with a serious and even morose tone. It was an Uncharted but without the fun, if I had to put it simply. Just a generic "let's follow the bullet points of the Uncharted formula" game. So I lost interest for the rest of the series: even if the production values are here, it just lacks something to make it interesting and fun to play.

And what is the difference between the 3 games? They're all the same stuff about "she's not the Tomb Raider yet"...

To finish, even if it's not a "good reason", the exclusivity fiasco tarnished the image of the series quite a bit. The PS4 release of Rise was completely anonymous, and they just didn't build a good PR on the 2013 bases. They could have, but they blew the good image of the reboot, and I'm sure that we heard about the series too much for a while, but not for the good reasons. After a while, people just lose interest, and it became like "Oh, one more Tomb Raider news, great...".

I have to agree with OP here,

For one, I just don't see how this game looks worse than rise, except for the character models, the graphics model is a step up from rise. People wanted less murderer Lara and more go exploring Lara, they did just that. Combat encounters are toned down in favour of more exploration/tombs. Gameplay is best it's ever been in the series. The new difficulty options letting you tweak certain aspects of the game while leaving others is great too.

It's too bad that Tomb Raider will probably be put on ice for a while as all of Square's Western teams go all in on Avengers.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Yeah. I saw that on Facebook. Thing is, she seems pretty much like the same person she was at the end of the first game. This adventure, she's already a seasoned explorer and, while she faces some adversity and set backs, it's no more an "origin story" than Uncharted 3 or something.

Maybe they should add a skin to give her pointy boobs ... might have worked ....

It's in there! Character models from Tomb Raider 2 (PS1), Angel of Darkness (PS2), and Tomb Raider 2013 (PS3) are there. Not sure if it's because of the Croft Edition, though.

Haven't played Shadow yet, and while I did like both the 2013 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider a lot, it seems to me that while the gameplay is still fun, the story and Lara's character especially haven't really progressed all that much in these three games. The first game was supposed to be Lara's origin story about how she became the tomb raider, but then Rise was basically just chapter 2 of her origin story about how she became the tomb raider, and now Shadow, from what I've heard, is just another part of her origin story.

By this point we should have already moved past all that, and gotten to see Lara as a fully developed, confident adventurer. Instead she still feels like the same character she started as in the beginning, except more willing to murder people I suppose. Lack of meaningful character development was one of my biggest issues with the first two games, and the fact that Lara never really becomes a truly engaging protagonist. She's just kinda dull and overly serious. If this series continues after this, I really hope they inject some sense of fun or attitude to Lara. Give her character a little bit of edge instead of this bland "just kinda there" girl who very seriously and stoically states how she "has to do this" all the time.

Wow I never thought of it this way, but you are right. This explains why I am always hesitant to play 2013 and Shadow despite loving Rise

For me it's a lack of the TLC feeling the uncharted games have.

What is TLC?

Yeah, it's the same reason why I'm in no rush to get to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I liked the first two games, but by the end of the second Lara's story hadn't really moved anywhere, and it doesn't seem like that's going to change  with this one. I'll probably get around to it eventually, but it's not a game I'm aching to play right now.

Having just finished it, I can tell you that there is alot of character development for Lara in this game, certainly more than she had in the first 2. Shadow isn't written by Rhianna Pratchett like 2013 and Rise were. Moderate spoiler: She starts the game as basically a killing machine who will do anything to stop Trinity, and by the end she lets go of her anger and decides that it is her job to protect the world's mysteries, rather than to solve them, becoming the Lara that we know from earlier games.

That's good to hear.
