Forums - Nintendo Discussion - One Year Later, Metroid Samus Returns Still Not Sold Over 500k

Played Samus Returns?

Yes 45 46.88%

Nope 51 53.13%

Total:96

I bought it on day one for the 3DS but all I could think about was how much better it would be in the Switch.
I don't have an excuse, though. It's a great game. Peele should have bought it. The franchise is going to go the way of many older series like Contra, Bionic Commando, etc. When it does, I will be so sad.

I'm glad Nintendo is getting what they deserve sometimes, they are half assing the metroid series.

Now maybe the poor sales are due to people thinking the new metroid games aren't worth buying, or maybe they just don't care about Metroid anymore and the franchise is slowly dying.

Anyway, to me if the future of metroid are games like Samus Return and Federation forces, the franchise is probably be better dead.

Maybe MP4 will be the messiah, but I'm not holding my breath

I wouldn't mind picking this up if it comes to the Switch.

Samus Returns is not a new game, its a remake.

The problem with it is that they released it exclusively for one of their earlier/obsolete platforms rather than their current platform. If the game had come out on Switch, it is likely that it would have sold many times better - as has been the case with other IPs mentioned in Curl-6's post a bit above.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

You've missed the point.  People have moved on from 3DS.  Some no longer own it, some just don't want to go back to the two screens and mediocre graphics.

I'm in the group that no longer owns a 3DS.  It sat for about 2 years with almost no use.  Then Switch came along and sealed the deal.  There was no reason for me to own a 3DS.  Had this game launched even one year sooner, I'd have purchased it.  Certainly, the same holds true for many people.

It is incumbent upon Nintendo to release the right games at the right times.  In this case, they failed on the timing.  Consequently, sales sucked.

He has a point though the 3DS is being handled the same way Sony handle their prior platform where it is supported while being phased out this helps smooth out the migration of one userbase into the next SR is the Metroid fill for 3DS while Switch gets its own title that's the whole point. They didn't fail on the timing as Switch was only out for a few months at that point with people still wondering what games were on the way (Switch at that point I recall had sold about 5-6m that doesn't account for the other 60m 3DS users at the time either), we see time and time again the Metroid userbase being loud but never walk the walk.

Fact is a kickstarter backed Metroidvania game in Hollow Knight heavily outsold SR in the same time frame.

Ths thread is a classic example of two groups talking not with each other, but next to each other - and both are right.

Group A says the Metroid fanbase should have been buying it by pointing to any individual customer. If you are a fan of Metroid and have a 3DS laying around somewhere, you have no excuse not to buy it.

Group B talks about the entire customer base as a whole, which has indeed walked away from the 3DS to some extent.

So weird because I love my 3DS, and it doesn't really feel that old to me. Or at least it most certainly didn't last March when people began telling Nintendo to move on.

I still have a few big 3DS games that I need to play through.

Can't speak for others. But I know for a fact if hollow knight was only on 3ds I wouldn't have bought it no matter what praise it got  not even for $5. I got it because it was available on the switch

Fair enough.  But, at least for this one Metroid fan (me), the timing just didn't work.  I no longer owned the system that it was released on.

And, certainly, this applies to more people than just me.

Both groups are wrong because they are missing the most crucial point: Samus Returns isn't a good Metroid game, let alone a great one.

That's your opinion anyway.

I just don't seem to be able to bring myself to be able to play mine, mostly because of the low resolution screens.
Mostly just got the 3DS for the Nintendo 64 ports and sold off my Nintendo 64.

I’m still awaiting the Switch port. I liked the original Metroid 2 back in the day. I’m one of the weird ones who enjoyed the first two Metroids, but not the later ones.

That said: Metroid Prime 4 - I have no plans to get that one, not unless someone like Monolithsoft does the game and transforms it into more of an RPG instead of an FPS dungeon crawler.

I enjoyed AM2R on the PC.
But Super Metroid has a soft spot for me.

I wouldn't mind both games getting an "Enhanced" port over to the Switch.
