Yes, she had the lyme disease and was close to die because of it, faith in God helped her to go through such diffficult times. This song represents her overcoming the illness.

I love the song.

Okay, so that explains it. Extreme stress caused by fear of death can often lead to psychological defense mechanisms, by which a person sees no other recourse but to begin bargaining with supernatural elements.

Does this make her a christian singer from now on? We'll see.

Or she did her research and found something right for her, not always a last option scenario

Maybe it's to do with her recent brush with death.

I didnt even know she was sick.... had to google it, first article I found:

In a letter to fans on her website, Lavigne said that the song Head Above Water reflected her struggle, and that she wrote it as she lay incapacitated on her couch.

“I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current,” - Avril lavigne

Many of my favourite bands sing about religion or god (Depeche Mode, Enigma...), doesn't mean you have to be religious (I am not religious at all)....

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

Her new album will be mostly about her struggle with lyme disease. In this particular song she's singing about how her faith helped her, but that doesn't mean that every single track on the album will have this exact same message.

It's a good song but it's just not my thing. It's just interesting that Avril is now singing a song about God.

A little backstory to all that question why she's singing about God:  I know a guy that when to church with her in her hometown before she became a singer and she would actively participate in the church choir.  So I guess maybe she found her root back to God with what's been going on in her life but her singing about God isn't new to her.

Yes, it's very common (especially in the Southern parts of the US) for professional singers to get their starts in churches.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I like the song, good stuff.

Why'd she have to go and make things so complicated?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Wasn't a big fan in her earlier days, but over time she's definitely grown as an artist. Really great song regardless of the spiritual aspect. Deep. Uplifting. Meaningful. Not my everyday choice of music but something that hits the spot nonetheless.
