Xbox played a big part in the PS4's success. Between the ridiculous restrictions, lack of top-tier exclusives, and condescending attitudes of their PR team, they practically handed Sony the win this gen.

Microsoft didn't just shoot themselves in the foot, they cut their own fucking legs off.

You are disregarding the power of Playstation as a brand,  outside of USA, Xbox have always been seen as an inferior brand. It was because of the name playstation that ps3 survived the same mistake what xbox one did and still  manage to sell the same amount of console as the most popular Xbox console in less time on the market. and if you think it was because of the launch blunders of Xbox one that made PS4 popular, I wouldn't disagree but thats not entirely true.

I dont think anyone would disagree when I say that at the end of 360 life cycle it felt like MS had abandoned their user base in terms of exclusive, and on the other hand in terms of exclusive Sony was on full song, and was flexing its First party muscle on PS3 even after the release of PS4. So IMO irrespective of MS PR blunder, i think what made PS4 more popular was the prospect of sony ability to pump out quality games at regular intervals and having quality First Party Developers.

P.S.- Ohh not to mention, I think more than MS PR mess i think the biggest blow to Xbox brand was when Bungie appeared on PS4 reveal event and the destiny deal.

Playstation has always been a supermassive brand, but when it came to popularity last gen, the 360 had the PS3 beat.

In my opinion, the scales only tipped when the 360's casual audience jumped ship to the PS4.

To research who the actual king of video games is, try this experiment.

Hold up portraits of Mario, Kratos or MC. Ask about 1000 random people in the street who they recognize.

Thats not very impressive considering nintendo has been milking the same 10 characters for over 20 years. Imagine if Sony started making 3-5 Kratos games and spinoffs every generation, what would happen in 20 years? Anyways all of Nintendos characters are kid friendly so they can make tons of toys and other merchandise, so of course more people will know of the characters. Yet this means nothing to the king of video games title, now if it was the king of video games merchandise or king of video game toys or maybe king of reusing IPs, then I would agree. Just did I quick search and since 1981 and there are around 300 video games featuring the character MARIO.

PS1 started it all and even though PS3 sold bad, for a PS console, it had the best games last gen. What a ride it has been.

Is Mario popular because there are so many Mario games or are there so many Mario games because he is popular?

Stupid argument. Unlike Kratos or MC the Mario character has been milked by Nintendo now for more than 30 years. How many different franchises/genres does he have now? Super Mario 2D, Super Mario 3D, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and so many more... Besides that Mario is one of the only few popular characters Nintendo has while Sony has more great and popular characters in different franchises besides Kratos for example Nathan Drake, Ratchet, Sackboy, Aloy, Cole MacGrath to name a few...

Who are those last two? I seriously have no idea were they come from and don't think I ever heard those names before.

My point was just that your sales numbers were not accurate.

We only have official numbers for total Playstation consoles sold (525.3M), the PS1 (102.49) and PS4 (81.2).  Your numbers are no more accurate than his.

PSP sales:

Talking about PS3 numbers, my numbers are based on numbers we have, like VGCH numbers and Wiki, and they are both around 85m. So yeah, my numbers are much more accurate in both cases than his, especially when we talk about PSP numbers.

They should have done one of these for Nintendo back when the Wii and DS were hot. Their method was so interesting, and there were a lot of details people don't know to this day.

But apparently Wii and DS were failures, and behind the 360 and PS3 in sales, even though that is not true at all.. maybe the same will happen to the PS4. I mean, who knows?

Well the point still stands on the high total sales.

Yes you are right, even if neither of us was trying to make an opposite point =]

His numbers are more accurate. I didn't check before, I just rounded from memory and got it wrong.

Kratos -> God of War

Nate -> Uncharted

Ratchet -> Ratchet and Clank

Sackboy -> Little Big Planet

Aloy -> Horizon Zero Dawn

Cole MacGrath -> Infamous 1 and 2.

Comeback? I never felt they were ever away.

I mean they didn’t win last-gen but they still sold about 165m consoles. Now if Atari or SEGA would make a new console that was successful, that would be a comeback.

What's up with the Atari box?

Oh yeah, that’s a.. thing.

I think you're getting the PS3's numbers muddled with those of the PS2. They sold on the order of 82-85m PS3s, depending on who you ask.

Sorry, meant PS3 and PSP put together.

They're the main characters from Horizon and Infamous respectively.

Thanks. Yeah I know those franchises but the names of the protagonists were unknown to me
