So there has been a lot of discussion regarding the future of JRPGs. One thing that has been pointed out pretty consistently is the evolution of the genre, which in it's most relevant forms now leans more towards Action RPGs rather than turn-based ones.

Action-RPGs are a basically a completely different gameplay than turn-based RPG. Your question about Pokemon turning into an ARPG is like asking if Doom should become a visual novel or Dark Souls becoming a shooter.

Sure, I have no problem with an ARPG Pokemon - as a spinoff. They should still make turn-based Pokemon games though.

Meh, I only created the topic because I've seen it brought up a surprising amount of times. Didn't make it because I thought it was some really pressing question. I agree that the concept is a bit ridiculous. People have said it for years though, and I just wanted to know how the members of this site specifically feel.

Also I would give Pokemon being an ARPG slightly more credit than Dark Souls being a visual novel. Just .... slightly

There are 802 different Pokemon, counting mega's, and evolution's.

Please tell me how realistic that would be for a programmer to make all of those Pokemon playable.

That's what you woudl want right? You throw a pokeball and the pokemon that comes out you are now in control of and fight against another pokemon?

Or what would be an ARPG for Pokemon? Is it just the same as now, except it's real time and not turn based? So you sit there staring at a bar on the bottom like WoW and wait for the cooldown to end on moves and push them?

I am going to go out on a limb and say that it isn't fair to criticize people who wants Pokemon to turn into Action RPGs because there's 802 Pokemon. I've never heard someone propose the idea for an ARPG Pokemon game and say in the same breath "I want EVERY Pokemon to be playable!" That's ludicrous and not a position that anyone is really arguing (You could say the same for turn-based Pokemon anyways, wanting every Pokemon in the game without using codes or trading or bringing over past saves has always been a fantasy of people).

What I do find really intriguing about your comment is how people would want the game to be an Action RPG. I always assumed it would work like taking control of your Pokemon, but surely some Pokemon would be very awkward to control. And in this thread alone, we've already seen someone who wants it in the style of Xenoblade, which is an interesting idea.

No one here played PokePark?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

And destroy everything they've built? They can always make a spin-off, but the traditional Pokémon game is what keeps them alive and fed.

How the heck would that even work? The closest I could see Pokemon being action is if it had a combat system like the original Ni No Kuni. But full on action? It just wouldn't work.

Maybe like an experimental title that is not in the way of mainline releases like the Lets Go (to the polls) shit that is coming out right now.

Pokemon should evolve into a dating sim game.

I think what is actually wrong with people reasoning is to associate evolution with the need to make the jump from Turn Based to Action Based.Action is not an evolution of the Turn Based style, as they are different approaches as to how a combat system can be structured and created.

But Pokemon needs to push its combat foward. As I have said, turning it into an action battle system is not the answer, though it could tecnically be.Instead it would need to reinvent its turn based gameplay.Just to throw an example out there:Make it more like the combat of FFX(Conditioned Turn Based Battle), where you can see the order of turns of your pokemon and the enemy for the next 10 or 15 turns and make a whole set of strategies around it.It would also make the whole changing Pokemon during battle more organic and fast.Of course things would need to be balanced out, but it would certainly be fun, and fresh.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
