Forums - Gaming Discussion - Telltale hit with massive layoffs, effectively closing down the company.

This is crazy news!

Telltale Games has laid off 285 employees, effectively ending the episodic developer’s operations. The studio is retaining 25 staff to complete the final season of its The Walking Dead adaptation, but online scuttlebutt suggests that its in-production Wolf Among Us and Stanger Things series have been cancelled. The Verge is reporting that none of the staff have received severance pay.

It’s been a turbulent time for Telltale Games these past few years, with reports of toxic management behind-the-scenes. Earlier in the year, former co-founder Kevin Bruner sued the organisation seeking recovery of financial damages. It’s not the first time that the firm’s been hit with layoffs either – last November it let go of 25 per cent of its workforce citing the “realities of [its] environment”.From our perspective, the oversaturation of Telltale Games’ output has diminished the inherent novelty of its titles, which has no doubt had a huge impact on their commercial performance. Nevertheless, the studio was in the process of restructuring itself, so it’s a shame that it’s now unlikely to see the procedure through.

Naturally, our thoughts go out to all of those who suddenly find themselves out of work.

I really enjoyed Game of Thrones. I'll be sad if this is the end.

Edit:

Re: I got laid off at Telltale

None of my sleepless nights or long hours on weekends trying to ship a game on time got me severance today. Don’t work overtime unless you’re paid for it, y’all. Protect your health. Companies don’t care about you.

Shit, this is always sad to hear. I hope that, even after all of their troubles, the last season of TWD ends up with a bang.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Wow so no Wolf Among Us 2...What the hell took them so long to even start it? Other games had like 10 seasons and now TWAU will never even get a second season. Well now I got to read the comics.

While I can understand that the game played in a similar way, you can't really say that Batman was similar to the Walking Dead, its a completely different world.

Also, as many of their games end on cliffhangers its disappointing that these won't be resolved. Had hoped to see where Batman went, with my character having just given up the cowl. Also I was looking forward to the Forresstor family joining the Battle of the Bastards in GoT. Maybe one of them will still have a cameo in Season 8 though.

Woah, bit of a shocker really. Still, I guess all things considered they're success had to run out sooner or later. The Walking Dead did really well for them, but when you keep releasing the exact same kind of game with a different coat of paint over and over again, sooner or later it's going to run out of steam. They really should have tried to diversify themselves more.

I was going to say whoa, but you beat me to it. I enjoyed the Batman game which I got with PS Plus, ( In spite of it's sometimes insane technical hiccups. There were parts that were borderline unplayable ), and have purchased several of their games over the years on multiple platforms, often double-dipping. Sad news. It was always nice to unwind with a Telltale game every now and again.

Its sad but i think we all saw that coming. They just made too many projects that kept performing not so great.

Idk they should have revised their formula at some point and make less projects, they just got too big and too greedy too fast.

I already paid for TWD final season. I hope the next chapter isn't "Clementine died on the way back to her home planet" .

I don't get it. Most of their games sold well I thought? Besides Borderlands what did bad? Batman? Game of Thrones? Wolf Among Us?

Anyways ... ehh ... what can I say? They did it to themselves by over-saturating the market with their own games.
