which you should be used to already, as you seem to own several Nintendo handhelds

I don't own the New 3DS, no...

they had a mid-gen upgrade for pretty much every of their handhelds, so if you managed to fight off the temptation to upgrade then I don't know why you would take offense now that this might become normal in the home console space aswell

Games didn't look or ran better on them though. It was just a cosmetic upgrade...or downgrade if you didn't like the new design.

Can you give links to the comments in the OP, please?

OP has a point, there was alot of backlash.... and yet it seems to have been a huge success story.

Hmm, that's happening all the time. Even if moves are anti consumer, people buy into it, if they get enough why they want it. So even if successful, it might be a shitty thing.

Anyways, I'm unsure how I stand towards mid-gen upgrades. As I bought a new 3DS I might lean in favor of them.

Well, the upgrade from my PS4 to PS4 Pro only costed me €140 and dozens of PS4 games profited from the additional power since then. So totally worth it.

An upgrade from my Xbox One to Xbox One X would be much more expensive and most of the "Xbox enhanced" games run in even better settings on my PC.

The New 3DS wasn't worth the upgrade for me since very few 3DS games profited from the better hardware.

That said: we don't know the size of the PS4 Pro install base, do we? So time didn't tell anything

How is it a huge success story? Sony doesn't even talk about its sales individually any more. The X1X isn't selling great but appears to be outselling the PS4 Pro launch aligned in the US. If anything, I Think Sony learned that the market for the PS4 Pro isn't as big as they thought it might be. They certainly haven't gotten the third party support they hoped for., as the vast majority of developers are doing nothing more than the very bare minimum, so much so that Sony had to develop modes that allowed the PS4 Pro to automatically enhance games rather than leaving it up to the developers themselves. The vast majority of PS4 buyers today are still choosing regular PS4s, not the pros. But hey, at least it's selling slightly better than PSVR, right?

I think it was a PSP Go-like experiment that ended up with a very "meh" response. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't see this again next generation.

I own a PS4 Pro, by the way. they had an "Upgrade deal" at one of the local chains here that had me only spending $100 out of pocket to upgrade my launch PS4 to the Pro, when I was about to spend half that on a new hard drive anyways.

There is a noticeable difference in sharpness on a 4K tv, and a huge difference for games with performance mode. In no way does it make the base PS4 pointless though. It is noce if you want it, but by no means required.

We all know the answer is "no".

We all know if this was about Nintendo hardware, you could just check out your files and provide quotes and links within mere minutes!

There were actually those that stated that the 8th gen would see more revisions than any generation before, due to how the market has evolved in recent years. Before the consoles launched at that. Just to point out that there are flip-sides to any discussion.

We see the Slim-version outsell the Pro-version in Japan week after week so i don't know how successful it has been. I still will say that iterative consoles are a waste of time, id' rather they invest in next generation
