So if releasing a feature on their new gen won't make any difference in sales why would they take the money to make it in current gen? Just to please you and a handful of gamers? Since PS3 we already know that the BC was lightly used.

The point is that it won't be a big thing regardless, and aging more and more won't help either.

So as they are still willing to release PS1 games to the modern audience, let them release it properly on their main system and not pointlessly wait more for it.

They will make it the way that gives more money. Not sure making the effort to release in PS4 would be this one.

They would win major PR points saving it for PS5 even if they won't make give much extra sales.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Of course they have an excuse.

You don’t need backwards compatibility if you have a fan base wiling to spend $100 on something like PS Classic.

How is that an excuse?

They released PS Classics on PSN for 5.99 to 9.99, which means with the 20 games alone they can make 120 to 200, without any need to produce more hardware and an install base or around 90M by December end.

Nostalgia, market presence and mass market appeal.

The SNES sold over 5 Million units in less than a year and further pushed Nintendo's brand power. Considering how popular the PS brand currently is, as well as the nostalgia wave they've been riding recently, It's reasonable to assume that the PS Classic will go on to match that, probably surpass it. At $99, €99 and £89 if you're guaranteed to sell 5+ Million, why would you bother releasing them on the PS store to potentially damage that push?

Like Carl said Nostalgia, market presence and mass market appeal the last two here being important in that they allow  that nostalgia in the form of PS classics to have a much wider scope than the PS store allows for, you not only open up these games to a much bigger audience, you also give those games a clearer focus than what they would otherwise receive .

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Sony should definitely do it. I'm glad to have a good collection of PS1 games on my PS3 account but every day I tend to wonder. Now that the PS3 production has stopped, for how many more years will they keep PSN for PS3 alive?. What will happen when they kill it?. What happened with Wiiware?. Did people lose everything that wasn't downloaded?. It would suck to lose my collection but either way, this is one of the reasons why physical needs to remain as a choice for future games. I just don't trust companies regarding this kind of thing.

Sony already has a device that can play PS1 games. Its called a PS1... or PS2... or PS3... or PSP... or Vita. Hence, Sony is confident you have one of those already.

I was thinking it would be cool if MS made a Xbox Classic. But then I came to conclusion that's stupid. Instead, MS should just release a special edition X1 with a with a collection of OG Xbox games on a disc. Throw in Halo:MCC as well. That for $199 is better than a dedicated device that just plays a collection of old games.

I am in favour of letting the games be available across all of their systems. Hell, even PC. Why restrict legacy software when there is clearly a demand for it?

puts head up ass.....

they dont need an excuse, they are the leading selling console maker. they will not give any as they believe they owe none.

takes head out of ass....

just staying on message.

edit: even though i think your right OP, just the arrogance lately, knows no bounds.

they also seem alot more able to listen to "the players" when not so far ahead, like when ps2 was out king of the mountain which lead to the ps3 disastrous launch, which they did turn around but much much more humble at the start of the ps4 launch, kinda gone to hell since the big numbers they have been boasting. also what happened to shu? he used to be allover the place, if he is out there, i havent seen him in awhile.

The funny thing is all this talk is happening towards the back end of the PS4's life , it's not like the PS4 is a year or two into it's life and people are making PS1 an hot issue , Sony have continued along the same path that gave us the games that made it the leading console, then at the back end we get calls of arrogance when they stay on that path, the talk we hear today about Sony only picked up volume when fuel added by the opposition who have a vested interest resulted in a media pile on that morphed what was a legitimate debate into a case of tall poppy syndrome.to the point where now it seems that any want not being executed by Sony is quickly turned to them being arrogant, rather than acknowledging that there are two sides to a story and their reasons may have a validity to them but unless we look we won't know.

So much this

People in this thread are ignoring the practical reasoning behind why the PS4 isn't BC with older gen games.

-Hardward Differenciation such as the PS3's Cell Architecture

-Licensing, maybe the most important road block

-The requirement that they meet certain industry standards in resolution and features like Trophy Support.

-And Yes, Sony has also created a potentially profitable alternative that future proofs Backwards compatibility via Streaming.

Playstation has also existed for a whole generation longer than xbox, and with a much bigger/older base of games to pull from for BC. 360 was just one generation ago, and the xbox architecture isn't completely adjacent to XB1's. I'm just saying the ability to do BC is leagues easier for Xbox than it is for Playstation.

This is literally the first Playstation console to not have standard BC, just as the Switch is also for Nintendo. I doubt it is arrogance on either party, but practical change  because of industry changes.

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

It really is silly we don't have PS1 games, we get individuals making emulators for various platforms constantly, yet Sony can't release PS1 games on PS4?

It's been a problem with Nintendo systems too, but PS1 still missing on PS4 is a glaring example.
