With the recent news that Netflix and the original show's creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, are remaking the show in a live-action adaptation set to start filming in 2019, this got me to reminisce about the original show and my experiences as a fan watching it during its run.

I remember when I was seeing the first teasers of the show back in late 2004 - early 2005 as it was about to premiere on Nickelodeon. I was 8 years old at the time. Back then, I thought, "Ehh, this looks alright, I guess. Probably not gonna watch it anyways." I was in my 'too cool for (insert here)' phase and didn't really give the show a second thought or chance, even as the year progressed and Book 1 was going on. I would catch glimpses of it every now and then, but I would just flip the channel back to Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, or turn on my GameCube and wait for it to end so that SpongeBob would come on afterwards.

Then, in September 2006, around the time of my 10th birthday, I was seeing nonstop trailers on Nickelodeon promoting its one hour Avatar special "The Secret of the Fire Nation" that contained two new episodes premiering back to back, 'The Serpent's Pass' and 'The Drill'. At the time, I thought, "Oooo, Fire Nation. Sounds cool!" So, I finally decided to sit down and actually give the show a shot with this one hour special... And the rest was history. I absolutely loved everything about it. The characters, the animation, the setting, the fight scenes, etc. Everything just clicked. and from that moment on, I couldn't get enough of the show! I watched all the episodes from the beginning all the way up to that special to get caught up, got familiar with the characters, the plot, etc. (This was the very first time I got into 'shipping' as well.) And every week, I was chomping at the bit waiting for the next episode. The wait between the season finale of Book 2 to the season premiere of Book 3 were torturous for me as the hype for the last season kept on building and building. Then when Book 3's episodes came and went, culminating with the 2 hour series finale, Sozin's Comet (Agni Kai: Azula vs. Zuko - the best fight in the series for me.) I thought to myself, "This is the greatest TV animated show I've ever seen." Fast forward to today, it's still the greatest animated show I've ever seen.

So what do you guys think? Were you fans of the show back then? Are you fans now? Favorite characters? Episodes? Season? Did you watch Korra? Did you like Korra? What were your thoughts on Avatar: the Last Airbender?

Around the Network

This scene always brings tears to my eyes every time I see it.

It's one of the best shows ever made, if not the best imo. It's the only show I can think of where I legitimately think it's completely perfect. The story, music, character development, literally everything about it. It also had the perfect blend of knowing when to be funny and also knowing when to be serious.

It will always hold a special place in my heart because I watched it when I was a kid too and continue to rewatch it even now all this time later because it's still just that good.

Also on a side note WTF why are they re-making it? I have more confidence in it since its the original creators but WHY, the original is already perfect as is. Please don't fuck it up.

Great show! F*** shamamaalalmalmalmala for the debacle that was the movie.

I thought it was pretty awesome. I didn’t see either Avatar while it was on the air, though. A buddy made me watch it after I explained in great detail why I was a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist (namely its hard magic system and consistent batch of enemies).

Katarra was my favourite character; I enjoyed watching the process of a noob achieve mastery over a long period of time, and her hair-loop-things was some fantastic character design.

Loved Azula, did not like Zuko. He crossed the Moral Event Horizon during multiple redemption opportunities, so I regard him as nothing but an opportunistic usurper, whose allegiances tended to be out of immediate convenience. Screw that guy.

I also liked Korea, but S2 was a mess. Still not sure how I feel about the structure of each season compared to Airbender, but I think they managed it pretty well.

As for the movie...well...like Beloved Leader, it worked real hard to earn its criticism. I rank it below The Room, because at least that movie was, on occasion, accidentally entertaining.

But a live action Netflix series helmed by the show’s creators? I AM SO IN.

Around the Network

It's alright. I didn't bother to watch it when it first aired, because I dislike young main characters. However as an adult I willingly chose to watch the entire series. I really enjoy shows with a map, different countries, different cultures and people. I also enjoyed the powers and fight scenes. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't show mastery of all elements by the end, and the ending was kind of abrupt imo. I enjoyed the overall themes as well.

I watched half of Korra, and I am saving the rest for a rainy day.

To answer your note to the mods; Yeeeaaaah, we have nothing to do with that, Talon was the guy you should have hit up, but he's not really around anymore.

As for the show itself, I never actually got into it. I did watch the odd episode when it was on, and from what I recall I did enjoy it, and I've always meant to watch it all at some point, just never actually got round to doing so. There's also the Korra thing too which I heard is just as good, if slightly worse, so I'll probably give that a watch somewhere down the line too.

In other Avatar: The Last Airbender news, how do you feel about the live action series Netflix have announced? :P

Ah, I see. If I ever see him online I think I’ll message him.

As for the Netflix show. I’m cautiously optimistic. The track record of live action adaptations of any cartoon, be it movie, TV show, etc. is not favorable to say the least. However, the fact that the ahow’s original creators are at the helm and in charge is enough for me to give it a chance and have hope that it’ll turn out good.

Great timing with the thread, I rewatched the show pretty recently (They released it on Bluray so it was a good excuse to watch again) and it still holds up really well. I've watched Korra around the time season 4 was coming out and I thought it was good but it's nowhere close to Last Airbender to me. It had its moments but there's also stuff that brought it down imo. I plan on rewatching it someday as well but I'm in no hurry to do so right now.

Oh really? That's pretty interesting then and gives me the impression that it COULD turn out alright, although I expect there to be a LOT of unfair comparisons to the animated show, lol

Yep, I've run into comparisons like that on Twitter already. lol
There is always the chance that the live-action adaptation could turn out terrible, but it's not like it's going to make the original worse. Worst case scenario, it's utter trash that gets canned after one season and the original show keeps aging like fine wine as it always has. It'll always be there whenever I want to watch it.
But if it turns out to be good... THAT'S what I'm really hopeful for. Because then there's no telling where the series can grow from there.

I remember watching Korra. I saw the entire series from beginning to end. It was originally meant to last only one season, which is why season 1 felt rushed. But it was so popular and did so well that they decided to keep it going... And I'll just say that it shows in the first half of season 2.
Korra Season 2 pre-Beginnings was, in my view, the lowest point of the entire series. The incredible animation was its saving grace at the time because the writing, especially for the characters (Korra and Mako in particular) was just awful. I was almost ready to give up on the show at that point until the one hour special "Beginnings".
Korra Season 2 from Beginnings onward was some of the best programming I saw from the series since Book 3 of the original. I would put "Beginnings" up against "Siege of the North", "Secret of the Fire Nation", "Day of Black Sun", or any one hour special from the original and I think it was just as good, if not slightly better.

But yeah, I pretty much agree with you about Korra. It had its flaws and is not on the same level as the original, but it's still a damn good show overall.
