Spiderman is the most popular superhero. No matter what you think, he's more popular than Batman, Iron Man and Captain America. The game is pretty good and has pretty graphics which makes it appealing to the masses. Its open world while God of War is linear. Spiderman is a standalone game and not a sequel to a long lineup of games like God of War so there is no story catching to do for new players.

On top of that, Avengers Infinity War came this year and Spidey had a major role in the film. It made 2.2 billion dollars. He died in the most tragic moment in the film. Many people are just happy to have him again, alive in a game.

There is too much reason for Spiderman to sell more. On top of all this, God of war is a niche series in UK and japan, the only countries where we have any data. Its mostly popular in North America, Latin America and the BRICS countries.

Nothing wrong with a game being linear. Can we stop with that nonsense already?

I thought we had more data than Japan and UK already... well it is a good start after all.

We now have data from Germany and Switzerland as well. Unfortunately, the German chart isn't multiplat but as one of the countries that prefers PlayStation the most, the multiplat chart is probably not that different. If any German-speaking users read this comment, it'd be great if they'd look for a multiplat chart covering Germany.

Germany:
1. Spider-Man (PS4, Standard Edition)
2. Dragon Quest XI (PS4)
3. Spider-Man (PS4, Special Edition)
4. F1 2018 (PS4)
5. NBA 2K19 (PS4)

Switzerland:
1. Spider-Man (PS4)
2. Dragon Quest XI (PS4)
3. NBA 2K19 (PS4)
4. Pro Evolution Soccer 19 (PS4)
5. F1 2018 (PS4)
6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
7. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
8. Detroit: Become Human (PS4)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
10. Minecraft (Switch)

Spider-Man still performs exceptionally on Amazon.
US: 3 (behind 2 PSN Cards)
Canada: 1
Japan: 1
India: 1
UK: 1
France: 1
Spain: 1
Italy: 3 (behind 2 PS4 versions of FIFA)
Germany: 10 (blame FIFA)

Nope. Superman is the most popular hero. Its just hard making a good movie for him and even harder or near impossible making a good game lol.

Yeah I’ve never understood that gripe. Like we need everything to be open world? Also, God Of War isn’t exactly linear.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Ah, people are really undermining the games achievements by casually throwing out "Spiderman is really popular"... Ok, so we would have bet on this being the top selling exclusive of 2018 when it was first revealed last year? And yeah, we know Spiderman is popular (never managed to outgross Batman at the box-office though) but Comic Book games have never been generation top sellers, so if this game manages to enter that category that will be really impressive.

As much as I love original stories, I'd love to see more top tier developers tackle books, films & TV shows which could be turned into amazing gaming titles with the right budget and talent (Harry Potter comes to mind).

GoW is a fairly small, niche brand, similar to Zelda in size, so this isn't surprising. SM is a giant global brand.

On position lists I have little doubt it will be N1 for the week in almost all. But I'm talking more about how it done compared to GoW so we can best guess FW.

Can't wait to see Spider-Man's FW but we probably won't know more about numbers or performance compared to GOW before official statements from Sony or NPD are released. At least, we know that Spider-Man is already close to surpass GOW lifetime in the UK:

"Spider-Man retains its No.1 spot for a second week. Impressively, the Sony game's week two sales are down just 42% compared to its launch week, and it's already on the brink of eclipsing the (lifetime) sales of the last big PS4 exclusive: God of War."
