Forums - Sales Discussion - Spider-Man Crushing God Of War In Some Regions

https://comicbook.com/gaming/amp/2018/09/12/spider-man-ps4-sales-japan-beating-god-of-war/

Surprised but not surprised. Spidey is more universal than Kratos as more people follow Marvel and comics. I didn’t think this game would impact PS4 growth that much because GOW didn’t really drive sales like we thought it would. I’m interested to see where this goes...

From the article:

Hot off the heels of setting a new sales record in the U.K.Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 is continuing its dominance in the regions of Japan.

Media Create has provided sales numbers for the past week in Japan, and while Nintendo Switch continued to be the sales leader in terms of hardware, Sony’s superhero adventure did quite well in its debut on the market.

According to the company’s numbers, the game sold over 125,000 in its debut week, which isn’t too shabby at all. In fact, it managed to lap God of War’s sales numbers from earlier in the year by two and a half times, as that game sold around 46,000 units when it released back in April. That spells good news for the web-slinger as we await news on its debut week in the U.S., where it’s likely to have a few million copies sold.

As for the remaining best-sellers in Japan, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 did quite well in its debut week, clearing out 20,000+ copies sold; and another Konami release, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS, landed in third place with just over 17,000 copies sold. Two Nintendo Switch release. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition and  Splatoon 2 rounded out the top five.

As for those hardware sales, the Nintendo Switch continued to lead with over 43,000 units sold, but Spider-Man helped give the PS4 a push, with 12,280 general models sold and 7,442 PlayStation 4 Pro systems sold. Those numbers will continue to push forward as well as fans clamor to get their hands on the amazing Spider-Man game. (That Playstation 4 Pro bundle certainly helps, we're guessing.)

Spider-Man is available now for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro.

This game's set to smash my 2.5 FW prediction... not to mention BraLod's cute lifetime estimates.

I don't know if i ever predicted first week sales, but i think i predicted over 10 million lifetime...

I think it'll sell 15 million right now.

Makes sense if Spider-Man is doing this. It has more of a mass market appeal than God Of War does.

Pretty impressive but God of War also has great legs, it can still be found in or near the top 10 worldwide. For everyone claiming this is about market appeal. Batman is more popular than Spiderman yet the Arkham games never did these kind of numbers. Sony marketed the shit out of this and it paid off, because the game looks great and plays great. Sure it helped that Spidey is the protagonist. Although I doubt it will outsell GOW in the long run.

Eh...that's actually pretty debatable. Spiderman is just as popular as Batman. If not *in some regions* more.

God of War has never been popular in Japan, has it?

Not surprising at all.

Beating God of War isn't really that surprising.

Spider Man has always been a step above other comic book characters in terms of commercial success and popularity. I remember reading only a few years back that Spider Man merchandise was bringing in as much as Avengers, Batman and Superman combined. With the growth of the MCU driving it, including the huge hype behind Infinity War and other recent live-action Spider Man appearances actually being enjoyed by the consumer, this game was always gonna do well. Just like the Spider Man 2 game for PS2 did well, coming off the huge popularity of the Raimi films.

The same could be seen with The Force Awakens, the re-invigoration of the Star Wars franchise and Battlefront selling as well as it did (despite being not very good!)... I'd also argue that Batman Begins/The Dark Knight helped to push the Arkham franchise of games, by once again making Batman a mass-market media darling.

With the continued push in the MCU, this game actually being good and the continued popularity of the PS4, this will be hitting 10 Million in no time at all.

Spiderman is the most popular superhero. No matter what you think, he's more popular than Batman, Iron Man and Captain America. The game is pretty good and has pretty graphics which makes it appealing to the masses. Its open world while God of War is linear. Spiderman is a standalone game and not a sequel to a long lineup of games like God of War so there is no story catching to do for new players.

On top of that, Avengers Infinity War came this year and Spidey had a major role in the film. It made 2.2 billion dollars. He died in the most tragic moment in the film. Many people are just happy to have him again, alive in a game.

There is too much reason for Spiderman to sell more. On top of all this, God of war is a niche series in UK and japan, the only countries where we have any data. Its mostly popular in North America, Latin America and the BRICS countries.

I thought we had more data than Japan and UK already... well it is a good start after all.

Cool. coolcoolcool. GOW is/was a sales monster, so I don't fault anybody for thinking that Spider-Man would sell less. Be interesting to see how the sales look for both after a year or so.
