From what I read most people here didnt play them at all or played them much later after they were released.

And most of those who chose the first series (like myself) are either nostalgia blind or trapped in the past, so it evens out!

I disagree, TR1/TR1/TR3 were one of best series of games in generation that had plenty of great games.

Or, they just prefer something else. :)

I think he's right - I'd say that people who played Legend trilogy and only then got their hands on Core's TRs find them clunky in controls - which they are. But that moment you're stepping backwards, counting steps to the edge, preparing for jump knowing that one tiny misstep will kill you...only in Core TRs.

That's what I loved about the original TRs. Everything was so meticulous and methodical. Once you had the controls down and understood the grid based level design, it was an absolute breeze to play. What I'd give for another TR game in this style.

Yeah, obvious influence of original Prince of Persia (they could've gone with diffrent approach, Rick Dangerous is there game after all and had no grid), which I liked very much.

The first series will always have a special place in my heart. It was true exploration and gave you a sense of discovery and wonder. The music was beautiful and added to the atmosphere. I enjoyed the feeling of being alone in an unknown place and figuring out how to proceed forward.
Now, it's a warzone and hundreds of people everywhere and survival and action. I enjoy the modern games too, but they're more Rambo than they are Indiana Jones.

The first three and Tombraider anniversary, the only truly good TR game of modern times.

Focus needs to be on exploration and puzzles, without a focus button or automatic grabbing ledges and already looking in the direction you need to go. How about just have a single button for combat, just hold down to defeat everyone like many games now have a single button to 'parkour' and automatically run up/over everything.

The Solus project gave me more of a TR vibe than the reboot.

Definitely the reboot series. The original series was a classic, but it hasn't aged well and is hurt by its last two entries being really poor, and the first Crystal Dynamics trilogy got off to a really good start with Legend, only to completely crash and burn with Underworld, which I'd actually argue would have been even worse than Angel of Darkness if not the latter also being so hopelessly broken and bug-ridden (Anniversary was okay, but nothing that special or memorable).

Platforming, level design, and puzzles were far superior in the old and innovative Tomb Raider games to what I've seen and heard from the reboot. But virtually everything else have been vastly improved (minus subjective aspects like art, atmosphere, music, etc). So it just comes down to personal priorities; they're pretty much from different genres gameplay wise.

You dont get it, TR1, TR2 and TR3 were much better games for its time than later games were for its time, like I wrote they were one of best games of hole generation that had plenty of great games (I mean first generation of 3D games). Of course that things like graphics and controls..will be better with later games, but they didnt had better exploration, atmosphere, puzzles, level design, huge focus was on exploration and finding right path...and that was actualy essence of Tomb Raider.

Oh, I totally "get it"

People, including old players, can get on with times and develop new habits and tastes. See Resident Evil 4 vs TRUE Resident Evil games. Hundreds of thousands of old school Resident Evil fans ended up preferring RE4 even though it insultingly strayed from the series' essence.

And hey, no one is obliged to choose the superior game based on how they "felt for their time" That's just your criteria.

Eh, RE4 is bad example, critically its one of best games ever.

Well yeah, that's my point and that's I wrote, "I think that most people that didnt played first 3 games when they are out, are choosing some other series". If you didnt played TR1/TR2/TR3 you cant know how great those game were because we talking about 1st generation of 3D games and every game more less didnt aged well from that generation.

LOL RE4 revolutionized 3rd person action shooters! And it wasnt as stupid as RE6

I definitely have some nostalgia for the original two Tomb Raider games for the original PlayStation going on, but really the current console series (the 2013 Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider) is my preference. The new Lara is just a more human and flexible character.

My absolute favorite installment in the franchise to date is definitely the 2013 console Tomb Raider reboot. It had the most genuinely compelling story and the most surprisingly dynamic character arc for Lara, plus less map clutter than Rise of the Tomb Raider and also than (to judge by the available preview footage anyway) Shadow of the Tomb Raider as well. It felt the most natural of all the games in the franchise to me. No wonder it's also been the top-seller among them! I feel that since then they've focused on making Lara into more of a superhuman type of character again and that's okay with me (I mean I get that this is an Indiana Jones-inspired franchise, after all), but not actually the way I'd prefer for this franchise to go at the end of the day.
