Nintendo is partially as great a developer as they are for the same reason that EA is - they own good developers (although, I'd have to say Nintendo probably owns much better ones).
People need to remember that.
Now, what has been stated in this thread is truth - Nintendo already has the status as "the Disney of videogames". They most definitely did have a very huge part in bringing videogaming to the level it's at today. The third generation of videogaming was started by the NES, which was released in Japan while the Crash of 1983 was taking place. The NES sold 60 million consoles, while its nearest competition - the Master System - sold 13 million. A very, very poor "competition", to say the least.
Assuredly, if it were not for the NES, gaming would be nothing like it is today. Thanks to the NES, we saw videogaming become a "mainstream hobby", and I can guarantee that the Turbografx16 and the Genesis wouldn't have existed if the NES hadn't. Without the NES, NEC likely wouldn't have seen gaming as a significant enough investment of their time and money. SEGA wouldn't have seen as much need to upgrade their Master System into the Mega Drive (or, quite possibly, they may have not even MADE the Master System), and even if they DID, the market just wouldn't have been quite as significant.
Of course, something would have existed during the 4th generation, but we can guarantee it wouldn't have been that big a deal. It probably wouldn't have been 16-bit, wouldn't have been able to produce pseudo-3D imagery, wouldn't have been as popular, and wouldn't have evolved into the 3D era as quickly.
Gaming today, I'd expect, would be around slightly pre-6th gen tech status if not for Nintendo, with far sub-5th gen popularly. We probably wouldn't see motion sensing, rumble, shoulder buttons, or analog sticks anywhere near the same way as we do today.
We wouldn't have Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, (as both of these previous games originated on Nintendo systems and likely wouldn't have debuted if not for the NES), Pokemon, or anything created as competition. And we'd have nothing inspired by any of them, either. We're talking probably no Sonic, no Crash Bandicoot, no God of War, no Okami, any of it.
Now, we can see much of that same sort of stuff ringing true in the animation industry if not for Disney. So much wouldn't have happened if not for Disney. With that said, Nintendo is most obviously already the Disney of videogaming.
EA can be the Dreamworks of videogaming.
