I wish that were the case my friend, for that would mean we would have more LoD games to play.

Except they did get critical acclaim and sell huge numbers. Splatoon 2 likely has a 50% attach rate when you factor in digital. That is HUGE, and when Sony only had 20 mil consoles in the wild, it failed go come close to those numbers with any of their 1st party games. |
Sony consoles have a ton of great games other than just first party so sales of individual titles are understandably lower. I mean look at the the number of million sellers on a Sony console vs any Nintendo console. People just have a lot more to choose from rather than just a handful of games worth playing that a Nintendo console gets so everyone has to make do with them. Anyway it's been decades since Nintendo made an IP that managed both Critical acclaim and huge blockbuster sales. they've managed one or the other a couple times, but both at the same time probably hasn't happened since the 90s.

So now we are pulling 3rd party games into a discussion about 1st party sales figures?
*notices the goal posts seem to be on wheels*

Meanwhile Sony just keep pretending it doesn't exist. I wonder how will they react once they finally man up and do another one and they have a heavy hitter on that and realize how much money they have been losing. They would make a fortune from me alone. BTW, I think Sony official mascots are Toro and Kuro, the cats. |
You and me both lol. This part of the gen seems to have a resurgence in revitalizing older IPs it seems, so fingers crossed!

You're the one derailing the conversation bud. It's about mascots and their importance. I have proven beyond a shadow of doubt why Sony has no need for them and MS/Nintendo are completely reliant on them and would go bankrupt if these few IPs were taken away from them as they simply lack the talent to create anything on the same level as what they did in the past. The attach rate of Sony's games vs. Nintendo's games has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Sony consoles sell more, have bigger libraries and a more diverse audience, all factors which lead to less attach rates for any individual game. Nintendo consoles have small install bases and very few worthwhile games to choose from and most buy the consoles for those few titles.

Answer me this...what new IP this gen aside from Horizon Zero Dawn has been both critically acclaimed and sold more than Splatoon 2 this gen?
Bear in mind that Uncharted 4 and God of War are both existing IPs being the 5th and 7th game in their respective IP...I'll wait...
And FYI, you were the one who dragged Nintendo into this by making a poor comparison to justify your otherwise valid opinion of them not needing a mascot. I am simply pointing out that your logic behind the comparison is flawed.

The new IPs of this gen are on their way. Ghost of Tsushima, Dreams, Death Stranding, Days Gone have yet to release.
Bear in mind that Splatoon 2 is a sequel to Splatoon 1, and not a new IP.

Ok first of all, you have to teach me how to time teavel to the future so I can play these games that have sold insane numbers and have lived up to their hype. (seriously, you just lost all credibility)
Second, Splatoon 2 being a sequel to a new IP at the end of the WiiU generation, a failed console mind you, is a huge difference crom IPs that are over a decade old on the PS4. (if you had not already lost credibility from point one, this would have finished the job).
I think we are done here lol.

Oh ok, so I guess I should add TLOU2 to the list of Sony’s upcoming new IPs then. XD
as to your other point I don’t need a time machine to know Sony’s upcoming games will be critically acclaimed and blockbusters. I have seen their footage and they all look sure shot winners. Days Gone is probably the only one that’s questionable and even that looks like it’ll manage a mid 80s metascore and 5+ million sales while the likes of GoT, Death Stranding, Dreams, TLOU2 are sure to be 90+ titles.
i know that’s a hard concept to grasp for you since in Nintendo’s case to know if they’ll make a 90+ rated game is to ask whether it has Mario or Zelda in it, but Sony makes 90+ rated titles all the time without appealing to people’s fuzzy feelings of nostalgia.

I know it is a hard concept for you to grasp, but a known IP can still deserve the scores it gets. As someone who has played Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2...AS WELL AS...Uncharted 4, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Bloodborne...I can tell you for a fact that all of those games from BOTH platforms are outstanding and fully deserve every bit of praise they have recieved.
But you would not know anything about that, would you?
