think sony hoped for more, but maybe upcoming games like kingdom hearts, ff VIIR, resident evil 2 R, granblue fantasy can boost it to 10 mil

You think FF7R is coming out on PS4. That's so adorable.

Surely it would make the most sense to release it on ps4 in 2020 then give it a remaster on ps5 in 2021 for maximum sales. Why would SE suddenly leave the ps4 and its massive WW user base?

Still pretty bad times for Sony in Japan. The lack of a fully supported Mobile is killing them. At its peak Sony had 23 Million PS2's and 20 Million PSP's in Japan. Now they are at 7 Million PS4 and almost 6 Million PSV's. With Nintendo offering AAA games for Home and Handheld consumption with SwItch, it looks like things will only get worse.

Sony is really gonna need that Ryzen/Navi Mobile SOC based PS Mobile device next gen if they want to have any presence in Japan. With Google bringing AAA games to Mobile and Home devices next gen it may be just as important in the US and EU as it will be in Japan. I believe even with 100% focus on PS4 it will still fall short of PS3 in Japan when it's all said and done.

I think Sony might be better off just offering smartphone games (which they already do with a lot of success) + building up game-streaming to smartphones/TVs to still profit from the japanese market.  The gaming demographic there is highly urbanised with great connection speeds/ping already available to many and the capabilities will see another jump with 5g.

Actually, when the PS4 came out, most people thought that it would sell less than the PS3 because of the fall of home consoles here. It's already a surprise to see it doing better. Nintendo didn't choose to do a hybrid for no reason...

Yea I remember that from the start of the gen, but that was when hardly anybody expected to see a full-blown DQ and MH on the PS4.

They should definitly continue to work on PS Now, and make a serious push at being the defacto game streaming service world wide. Continuing to make Mobile focused games is also a worthwhile effort, and I think they should offer them for both iOS/Android, and their own new Gaming focused Mobile device. A game like Fate/Grand Order should be on iOS/Android/PlayStation.

Where their own device should differ from iOS and Android is in offering SIEWWS titles. I think Madden, Call of Duty, Assasins Creed, Grand Theft Auto, and such will be coming day and date on Android and iOS next gen. If that happens, Sony is going to need a Mobile device to stand a fighting chance in this industry. I don't want to head out of next gen with iPhones/Apple TV and Androids/Chromecast being the market leader for AAA gaming expereinces.

Even if that doesn't happen by the start of next gen, I think Sony should be spending the little time they have getting ahead of them as much as possible, to ensure they never are in position to take control of the gaming market.

Best selling home console of its generation in Japan. The only platform from that generation likely to outsell its predecessor. Not bad PS4.

Well it won't take too many years for the Switch to beat PS4 in Japan (7m vs 4,8m), and I don't understand your second statement, the Switch also outsold its predecessor

No one expects the PS4 to outsell a handheld  capable Nintendo device in Japan. The Switch is not the same gen as the PS4. The Wii U was a horrible failure that released before the PS4, at a lower price, and as a followup to a more popular console yet it got crushed by the PS4.

PS2 sold over 20 Mil, this is pretty disappointing. All the consoles are really disappointing. They in to mobile games or what?

The mobile games were negligible or almost during the PS2 era. The mobile games market in Japan was at 5.1 billions dollars in 2012, and 9.5 billions in 2015. It now has a 25% annual growth rate, and is bigger than the US market even with 3 times less mobile users.

Meanwhile, the console market was at 2.6 billions in 2016 (-7% between 2015 and 2016). It's apparently 3 times smaller than 10 years ago.

So yes, they're pretty much into mobile now.

WT*, it's bigger than the us market??

Why does Japan hate consoles -_-

So you're saying your statement is partial, an excludes a competitor on purpose ("No one expects the PS4 to outsell the Switch"). That doesn't make any sense.

And you said PS4 is the one which will outsell its predecessor, so why do you compare the Wii U to the PS4 instead of the Switch, the successor of the Wii U ?

Because he doesn't consider the Switch a home console (which it is by Nintendo's own words) most probably and keeps his argument to the age old arbitrary gen frame, which is funny since gens hardly mean anything after every other manufacturer has done hardware upgrades. Oh well, anything to fit the argument I guess. Let's pretend the Switch is not stomping the PS4 in Japan.
