Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Are we ever going to get a 3D Yoshi?

So, I bought Mario Odyssey a few days ago and today I reached the part where you get to play as Yoshi. I have to say, I had a blast with that part of the Mushroom Kingdom level.

That got me thinking, why don't we already have a 3D Yoshi game? We have already seen in Galaxy 2 that Yoshi works just fine in 3D, and Odyssey brings that point home. Woolly World was fun and I am sure the 2019 game is going to be just as fun, but it is time for something new for our favorite green dinosaur.

I always felt like tearaway is what a 3d Yoshi should be. Take that arts and crafts aesthetic and just go crazy with it and that would be a good Yoshi game

Yoshi's Story almost counts? For a game with just Yoshi, no Baby Mario, what would the game even be about? Yoshi's Story was really cheesy, but could serve as a conceptual starting point. Yoshi games are always a cuteness overload concept, like saving babies (ends up being less cute than it sounds), saving Yoshi's friends, or just trying to be cuddly and happy and live a cuddly, happy life. In all likelihood, Nintendo would start from there. I imagine from there it would play out like the Yoshi-centric sections of Mario's 3D games, but with a much cuter aesthetic.

Since the new Yoshi game feels very similar to Wooly World, getting a 3D game instead would've been way more interesting to me. There's plenty of Nintendo franchises that should go 3D or try it again to be honest. 3D Donkey Kong without the absurd amount of collectibles that DK64 had could be great, and I really want to see how a full-blown 3D Kirby would work.

Good idea. I hope we get it sometime.

Frankly, I thought wooly world sucked. Therefore, I'm not excited about the new Yoshi game. I'll probably give it a shot anyway, but not until I can get it used and return it if I don't like it. But, I definitely would pick up a 3D Yoshi game at launch.

I doubt we'll ever get a 3D Yoshi game sadly. I'd definitely like to see what they can accomplish with it though.

Nintendo seems a little bit unwilling to make 3D plattformers outside of Mario. Both Galaxy 2 and Odyssey shows that a 3D Yoshi could work so i wish they tried

Have you played Super Mario 64 on the DS? Yoshi is fully playable, in fact he's the only playable character to start! Yoshi could work in 3D pretty easily really. I just think Nintendo won't give him a standalone game because if it's going to play exactly like Mario, they probably figure why not just make it a Mario game?

Nintendo's philosophy on new characters is that they don't create new characters or even use the less commonly used ones they already have if they already have more recognizable characters that would fit the gameplay. That's why Mario has explored just about every genre out there. It's why Kirby's Epic Yarn was a Kirby game instead of being a new IP with Prince Fluff as the main character. It's why Peach didn't get a normal platformer and got a game where she uses her emotions to fight (Sexist? Maybe. But Mario definitely doesn't fit this gameplay). It's why we don't have a Waluigi game yet, Wario basically fulfills any role Waluigi could that Mario can't. Peach fills most roles that Daisy could, so we see more of her than of Daisy and Daisy will probably never get her own game (no matter how much I want a "Daisy saves Luigi" game).

Yoshi games have Yoshi because dedicated Yoshi games all have a cute aesthetic that wouldn't make sense for Mario. Saving babies? A world where everyone and everything is made of yarn? A popup storybook about eating fruit and living in paradise? These game concepts make more sense for a cute dinosaur, not a 30 something plumber. If Yoshi gets a 3D game, it will be 3D Yoshi's Island, 3D Yoshi's Story, 3D Woolly World, or some other hyperadorable concept, not "3D Mario but with Yoshi just because".

This philosophy frustrates fans of Mario's side characters, but the advantage is that Nintendo has avoided the "too many characters" problem that Sonic the Hedgehog has, even though there are as many official Mario characters as Sonic characters.

Hahaha, of course. the famous "everything should go 3D 'cuz I want it so" entitlement argument.

Better luck next time, Kirby and Yoshi's core concept have always worked specifically for 2D(or 2.5D) purposes.

Not that it couldn't be done in 3D of course, but I don't trust them into making experiences that will thrive these concepts in the same way that their recent games already do well.

Did someone piss in your cheerios? I wasn't demanding shit. I just said it would be awesome if a 3D Yoshi game would get made, that's it.

Maybe, we almost did get a 3D Yoshi on the N64 from Argonaut Software (they did Star Fox 1 and 2 for SNES), but the deal fell through and they took the game and turned it into Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. I'm sure it could actually happen though, I'd like to see what could be done just like I would welcome a 3D Kirby or another 3D Donkey Kong game. It seems Nintendo likes to keep most of its platformers in 2D though, I suppose it's easier for them to build off what works in previous games like that.
