Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A look at the Switch's library so far...

The switch is pretty cool, but i'm not going to sing it's praises this year. Where's the switches god of war? Spiderman? Far Cry 5? Assassin Creed Odyssey? Monster Hunter worlds? Red dead 2? Battlefield V? Shadow of the tomb raider? Fallout 76? Darksiders3?
We can try to say this year kinda sucks because last year was so good, but my observation would lead me to believe that what the switch experienced last year is almost the norm for other consoles. The switches greatest appeal is playing AAA anywhere, but how many AAA did the system get this year? the short answer, in my opinion, is not enough. I've spent most of the year playing indies and a very solid, but probably overpriced JRPG. Seems like i could have chosen the 2ds and done the same. If I'm understanding of the opening post is accurate, then i would disagree with the idea that 2018 is lackluster due to last years lineup. Not if your looking at the switch as more than just a handheld system. Now i do fully realize that a direct could change alot of this, but as of right now i stand by my statement.

Where is the PS4's Octopath Traveler, Smash, Mario Party, Xenoblade 2 Torna, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta 2, Kirby, Pokemon, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Mario Tennis, Splatoon DLC, Captain Toad?

Could it be that different people have varied tastes in games?

I currently have 62 games with 7 games on my eShop wishlist and 13 physical versions(with more coming as soon as the ability to order opens) pre-ordered. I don't care if many have been on other consoles and i am swimming in games

I'm more than happy with the Switch library. I think its one of the most diverse line ups Nintendo have had for some time.

Thank God no one has to choose, eh? I'll be playing the PS4 games I want to and the Switch games I want to. A great line-up on PS4 doesn't make the Switch line-up better or worse.

If you open up the US eshop right now and click on software without a filter you will see 1015 titles on offer, excluding things like the 3 versions of NBA and 2 versions of WWE... and a couple of other titles such as the multiplayer part required to be downloaded to play pac man vs with others you're looking at a system which has 1000 titles to pick from on a system which has been out for around 500 days, means per day since launch 2 games have come out for it.

Compare that to things like the Gamecube which had 600 games (while being around for 2500 days) or even the original Xbox which had just under 1050 titles (across all regions of availability) during their complete lifetime the Switch has been pumping out a close to impossible stream of games if you wanted to play / complete them all.

Just from a simple math point of view, anyone who is of the impression that the Switch only has a handful of titles which appeal to them... then you are a very picky gamer and that's more on you than the system.

Well said!  Too many people try to act like indies, A, and AA do not matter.  In the end, they are only limiting themselves.

i love my switch n think the library is great and I havent even got everything I wanted to avoid building a huge backlog

2018 feels comparable to 2017, just with a few less 1st party critical darlings and a few less niches represented to scratch everyone's various itches. 2019 is going to be amazing, with Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Daemon x Machina, Bayonetta 3, Pokemon, and probably Pikmin 4, maybe Metroid Prime 4, and possibly even Animal Crossing, just with 1st party.

I think the main problem with this year is there hasn't been a single AAA game released. Well I guess perhaps Fortnite counts? Does it? At least it is really popular, don't know if it counts as AAA. Nintendo themselves have released a few AA new games and ports, but not a single major game. Considering the Pokemon this year is a spin off of Pokemon Go I wouldn't consider that AAA either. So basically Nintendo, with all of their resources essentially now being able to focus on a single system for the first time, are somehow going the whole first 11 months of the year without releasing a single AAA game, and then just releasing one in December. In terms of indies, and second tier first party and third games and old ports the Switch's year has been alright, but 14 months between a single AAA first party game releasing (SMO to Smash) when they don't even have to split there support in half between focusing on two systems, is just outrageous.

The only thing that would make this make sense is if they focused most of their resources on the big 2017 games and then need two years to get the next round of big games going and they are gonna blow us away in 2019 with many major first party titles again. If you're just looking for big title highlights to rank a year's worth of software by, Switch has almost nothing for the whole year outside of Smash, at least in terms of first party stuff. I'm starting to question their priorities though that they would go 14 months between AAA releases, not that AAA releases are all that counts, cuz they only have so many properties that can be classified as such, but still that is a ridiculously long draught especially when considering they really only have a single system to focus on now.

pretty sure that Wolfenstein II should be considered AAA game...

It's terrible, isn't it? If it wasn't for Rocket League, the Switch would have literally nothing to play.
