Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A look at the Switch's library so far...

I think the main problem with this year is there hasn't been a single AAA game released. Well I guess perhaps Fortnite counts? Does it? At least it is really popular, don't know if it counts as AAA. Nintendo themselves have released a few AA new games and ports, but not a single major game. Considering the Pokemon this year is a spin off of Pokemon Go I wouldn't consider that AAA either. So basically Nintendo, with all of their resources essentially now being able to focus on a single system for the first time, are somehow going the whole first 11 months of the year without releasing a single AAA game, and then just releasing one in December. In terms of indies, and second tier first party and third games and old ports the Switch's year has been alright, but 14 months between a single AAA first party game releasing (SMO to Smash) when they don't even have to split there support in half between focusing on two systems, is just outrageous.

The only thing that would make this make sense is if they focused most of their resources on the big 2017 games and then need two years to get the next round of big games going and they are gonna blow us away in 2019 with many major first party titles again. If you're just looking for big title highlights to rank a year's worth of software by, Switch has almost nothing for the whole year outside of Smash, at least in terms of first party stuff. I'm starting to question their priorities though that they would go 14 months between AAA releases, not that AAA releases are all that counts, cuz they only have so many properties that can be classified as such, but still that is a ridiculously long draught especially when considering they really only have a single system to focus on now.

I believe you have the definition of the word "drought" twisted.  There clearly has been no drought by any means on Switch, and there is plenty to play.

However you are right in that there have been no real system sellers on the console since holiday 2017, and the reason is likely to have a killer 2019.  But is that really outside of the norm when it comes to ANY new console?

The PS4 had not had a real system seller until Bloodborne landed.  Outside of that, it was over two years into its life before Uncharted 4 finally came.  Even if you count AAA titles, you have...

Killzone SF

Infamous SS

The Order 1886

Bloodborne

There were some AA games, but that is not what you are talking about.  Meanwhile in LESS than two years on Switch, there has been...

Zelda BotW

Splatoon 2

Mario Odyssey

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Smash

Pokemon

So in terms of first party AAA output, which is what you are looking at, the Switch is ahead of what the other two consoles have been able to produce internally.  It just looks worse because of how stellar 2017 was overall.  With that in mind, it is understandable that a period of ports and multiplat games would be what holds consumers over until the next big game drops.  And even then, we got Octopath Traveler.  A game many people see as AA, yet the content is alongside AAA experiences.  Just because a game is not AAA, that does not mean it does not deserve to be credited as an essential part of the exclusive library as well.

I think the perception comes from the fact that both Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey were outstanding games. So far in 2018 nothing matches it. I don't know if Let's Go Pokemon can, but surely can Smash Ultimate, so the perception will change after the smash release.

10 years greatest game event!

You missed quite a few for 2018 with Daemon x Machina, Celeste, Hollow Knight SNKH, BlazblueTB, Outlast 1+2, Undertale and TWEWY off the top of my head, this year has seen more releases in general than last and has actually been quite solid people shouldn't mistake not having BOTW and SMO this year as poor. Last year had fewer releases but the releases were games like BOTW, SMO, XBC2 etc... this year was more a AA affair but we had much more come out.

Why ignore the dozen or so games they published between Mario Odyssey & Smash Bros?

Dec-Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Feb-Bayonetta 2

March-Kirby: Star Allies

April-Labo Variety/Robot

May-DKC: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors

June-Sushi Striker, Mario Tennis: Aces

July-Captain Toad

Sept-Xenoblade 2: Torna, Labo Vehicle

Oct-Super Mario Party

Nov-Pokemon Lets Go

Thats 14 games in 12 months which doesnt include the handful of 3DS games they made this year as well.

You are focusing on AAA but last year only had 2 games (Zelda/Mario) that would really be considered AAA, one of which was only in 2017 because it was delayed.

idk i have over 60 titles on Switch so, im not hurting for games at all and im satisfied with the library of games i myself have. I can see how some would be disappointed though.

Most of what you listed was covered by the comment I made when I said, "hundreds of indie titles".  ;P

But yeah, that is my point.  The Switch has a rich library of games, it is just that most of the games in 2018 are more AA than AAA, and there is nothing wrong with that.  It is just the perceptions people tend to get when it happens right after a stellar 2017 in terms of AAA exclusives.

Well I don't care at all how many A's people want to attach to a game. A good game is a good game, period. So far the library is full of great games of all shapes, sizes and genres. Not once have I found myself bored because I didn't know what to play on the Switch. The general audience probably doesn't feel that way either, because the system sells good throughout the entire year and will gain a nice boost in the later months. I am very happy so far, I already own almost as many games for the Switch like for the Wii U and there are still a lot more games on my radar in the future.

I'm very happy with my Switch. I've played plenty of good games on the Switch already and it still feels like the games I want to play are coming out faster than I can play them. I think there are plenty of games out there for current Switch owners to keep them satisfied.

The main problem with 2018, IMO, is purely a business one. They saved all of their big guns for the end of the year. Smash, Pokemon Go, and Mario Party are going to be the best selling Switch games from 2018. For whatever reason, they are saving them all for the end of the year. While 2017 had a bigger, better first party line up and they spaced their big games out throughout the year.  I would think that it would be better business for them to have spaced out their big releases in 2018 too.

The switch is pretty cool, but i'm not going to sing it's praises this year. Where's the switches god of war? Spiderman? Far Cry 5? Assassin Creed Odyssey? Monster Hunter worlds? Red dead 2? Battlefield V? Shadow of the tomb raider? Fallout 76? Darksiders3?
We can try to say this year kinda sucks because last year was so good, but my observation would lead me to believe that what the switch experienced last year is almost the norm for other consoles. The switches greatest appeal is playing AAA anywhere, but how many AAA did the system get this year? the short answer, in my opinion, is not enough. I've spent most of the year playing indies and a very solid, but probably overpriced JRPG. Seems like i could have chosen the 2ds and done the same. If I'm understanding of the opening post is accurate, then i would disagree with the idea that 2018 is lackluster due to last years lineup. Not if your looking at the switch as more than just a handheld system. Now i do fully realize that a direct could change alot of this, but as of right now i stand by my statement.

It's pretty good. It could be better, but still pretty good .
