Forums - Sports Discussion - The NFL Thread 2018: The New England Patriots win Super Bowl LIII

Who Will Win Super Bowl LIII?

Saints 5 21.74%

Chiefs 2 8.70%

Rams 3 13.04%

Patriots 9 39.13%

Cowboys 2 8.70%

Chargers 1 4.35%

Eagles 1 4.35%

Colts 0 0%

Total:23

Not sure if this will change anyone's pick, but I thought it'd be good to leave here regardless.

Four yet to be named Jaguars' DBs were arrested at 4 AM London time (yes, the day before their game with the Eagles tomorrow) after being involved in a bar fight. Not sure if we'll be told who they were or whether they'll play or not until gametime.

I'll try and update the thread if any more news comes in.

I love that the Eagles are tanking this year :) Too bad the Cowboys are mediocre. Giants are absolute trash, and Redskins are meh.

Unfortunately missed predicting all the games due to my Tokyo trip... Picking Patriots of course tomorrow.

Going to have to keep a tab on my actual predictions correct out of total predictions.

Do you want to predict a margin of victory?

A relatively upset free slate of games led to one of the best weeks for the prediction league thus far. Everyone who managed to get all of their predictions in posted 10 wins or better. Not sure if this is a record or not but it seems like one of the best weeks in my recollection of this league. At the top of the pack was yours truly, thwarted from attaining the elusive perfect week by...dammit, Detroit. Why can't you make up your mind if you're a halfway decent team or not? You beat the Patriots and Packers and you get beat down by two scores at home? Against Seattle? Whatever. Carl, cycychris, and NobleTeam360 all tied for second with a 12-2 record, and nearly everyone else went 11-3.

After quite a bit of volatility from week to week, our standings seem to be settling down. cycychris moved up into a tie for first, although he still trails in PP significantly. I moved up a couple spots into 6th place, although I'm going to need a few more really good weeks like this to be in serious contention for first place. The top 5, meanwhile, are all within 2 games of first place, so this race is by no means settled.

As always, please look over your results and let me know if I've made any mistakes. The formula issue involving Rol should be fixed now, so hopefully that's no longer a problem.

Weekly League Manager Soapbox

So Ty Montgomery was unjustifiably an arrogant idiot at the end of this week's Packers-Rams game. After being told specifically to kneel down if the kick went into the end zone (it did) in order to give Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Green Bay offense a chance to drive down for what would be a game winning score, he instead opted to ignore a direct command from a coach and return the ball. And, of course, he fumbled it, allowing the Rams to run out the clock for a 29-27 win. Montgomery deserves criticism (and quite possibly the pink slip) after that.

What he does not deserve, however, is the death threats his family has been receiving since that game. At the end of the day, it's a football game, and while it's certainly fine to criticize a player for being an absolute cretin, the criticism should begin and end with football (unless, of course, he does something stupid outside the boundaries of a football game). This practice of fans being absolute dicks to players is an unfortunately common one: last week, a Patriots' fan poured beer on Tyreek Hill. A Steelers' fan hit David Andrews with a cup of some sort last year. Bengals' fans threw trash at an injured Ben Roethlisberger during a 2015 playoff game. And these are just the instances that come off the top of my head; I'm sure there are plenty more I'm just not thinking of at the moment.

It's worth remembering that in the midst of intense rivalries, playoff races, and sex toys thrown onto the field, that everyone out there is a person, too. And, yeah, while it's reasonable (and even a little fun) to hate the coaches and players on the other side, at the end of the day, they're human, just like us. The only reason we dislike them is because some general manager made a choice to pick or trade them that was likely entirely out of their control. So while it's fine to dislike them within the context of the game, that really shouldn't extend beyond the game. Root for them to do poorly, but don't start treating them worse as a human.

And with that in mind, I hope Aaron Rodgers breaks his throwing arm so he can't play next week.
