It won't help to improve the quality of their first-party output.

Microsoft thinks everything can be done as long as you throw enough money at it. Developer-wise they're just not very good, most of their games receive poor to mixed reviews.

hahaha

There are literally 50 responses here with more or less the same message "Don't do it, Microsoft! I like their games!" and you are like "It won't improve the quality, they are not good!".

Rare also used to be good before Microsoft bought them.

Mercury Steam made crappy Castlevania games under Konami, but under the guidance of Nintendo they made a good Metroid game.

Microsoft mismanages their studios, that much is clear. They're no Nintendo or Sony when it comes to managing their development studios.

Hope it's true.

Bloody hell, I hope not. The others I didn't care about but this would completely suck. If it's true, I hope it turns into a "original developers leave to form a new studio" situation, though losing the PoE IP would be kind of lame.

How is that a negative? Obviously if you dont own a Xbox or Windows 10 PC i can see the issues.

Well its just a rumour so dont take it as a guarantee just yet.

Because they ruin and close many of the studios they purchase.

How so, can you provide links to how they do this to there studios? Or are you referring to the struggling studios under them that in some cases require them to close the doors or reshuffle them? Much like every other company like Sony and Nintendo do all the time aswell.

- Quantum Break was announced alongside the xbox one announcement. which was infamous for its focus on "TV". and guess what, QB had a "tv show" plugged in a video game somehow, the end product was not too good. and while this isnt nearly as bad as the previous mentions its just another indication of MS middling in the games and doing what they want instead of letting a dev make the game they want to make.

I just want to point out that I don't think this is the case with Quantum Break.

Sami Järvi (Sam Lake) explained in an interview with Finnish gaming magazine that before Xbox One was even launched, it was Remedy's idea to combine a video game and a tv-show. They brought this idea to Microsoft and because Microsoft had plans with television stuff for Xbox One, they encouraged Remedy to take this tv-show idea even further. Järvi says everyone at Remedy agreed that they want to be even more ambitious and make the game bigger.

Here's a link to one interview, it's in Finnish though https://www.savonsanomat.fi/kulttuuri/Quantum-Break-on-Remedyn-j%C3%A4ttisatsaus-Rahallisesti-voidaan-puhua-isosta-Hollywood-tuotannosta/752224

edit. here's an interview in English https://venturebeat.com/2016/04/11/remedys-sam-lake-stepped-up-the-creativity-and-ambition-with-microsofts-quantum-break/

Microsoft made it possible for Remedy to push their vision further. Must have been great for Remedy.

"The actors, having known talent on this level—that was in the talks, very early on. It came from this idea of creating a big Hollywood blockbuster type of experience. But it was in large part thanks to Microsoft being willing to fund the idea and give us the support to pull it off".

They won't get creative freedom and they won't have a budget free from constraints. Be a very bad move for them and the industry. For the life of me I can't understand why Microsoft don't develop more studios of their own. They have the money, they're just too lazy to do it.

How many of Sony's major studios where acquisitions done in the past?

I like how hard you pretend it's not a thing that happens.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIE_Worldwide_Studios

Currently Active:

Media Molecule was acquired by Sony in 2010.

Sucker Punch was acquired by Sony in 2011.

Guerrilla Games was acquired by Sony in 2005.

Naughty Dog was acquired by Sony in 2001.

Bend Studio was acquired by Sony in 2000.

Defunct:

Zipper Interactive got acquired by Sony in 2006 then got closed by them in 2012.

Evolution Studios were acquired by Sony in 2007 then got closed by them in 2016.

bigbig Studios was acquired by Sony in 2007 then got closed by them in 2012.

That's at least 8 acquisitions, i'm not even sure I found them all since this is just from a quick search through that wikipedia page. So according to Kerotan Sony must be lazy as well.

Not sure all of them necessarily count as 'major' studios but they were acquisitions none the less.

Obsidian is one of the oldest independent studios with a very dedicated fanbase. The studio had been formed when their previous company, Black Isle Studios (hence the name, Black Isle, Obsidian, geddit?) got bought up, which most employees didn't like one bit. You can be damn sure that a similar exodus would happen if Microsoft would buy Obsidian, draining the Studio off all it's talent. Basically what Microsoft would get would be a bunch of IP and nobody anymore to continue them.

I highly doubt that those devs like living hand-to-mouth as an independent studio any more than the head, Feargus Erquhart, does. It's my understanding that there have been weeks and sometimes even months where the financial situation at Obsidian was so bad that they couldn't pay some of the developers until they got their next big in-flow of cash, either from a game's release or from a kickstarter. The studio has already had to downsize multiple times, if I was a dev there I would be worried about being in the next wave of layoffs. Being bought by MS means a steady, guaranteed paycheck and considerably more job security, even if does result in a loss of some creative freedom.

Yeah, I agree. But the problem is somewhere else. Obsidian offers stuff in a niche, that is not big but has very engaged fans. Before Pillars there was basically nothing in that niche for years. A studio so significant going to a first-party is a problem, as the content gets locked into specific platforms. I wouldn't mind if Obsidian goes to Ubisoft, Sega or THQ Nordic.
