ITT: "This is bad because I personally don't like Microsoft because reasons".

Seriously? People always complain because Microsoft doesn't have many studios, so why are people complaining when they acquire one? Especially a studio with experience in something MS doesn't do often (probably a response to "Xbox has no diversity!"). I can understand not wanting to build a studio from scratch as it takes time, so why is there so much backlash when MS does exactly what people say they want them to do?

Obsidian is one of the oldest independent studios with a very dedicated fanbase. The studio had been formed when their previous company, Black Isle Studios (hence the name, Black Isle, Obsidian, geddit?) got bought up, which most employees didn't like one bit. You can be damn sure that a similar exodus would happen if Microsoft would buy Obsidian, draining the Studio off all it's talent. Basically what Microsoft would get would be a bunch of IP and nobody anymore to continue them.

Yeah, I really don't understand some people's logic here.

These past few years, hell even most of this generation, have been arguably the worst for Microsoft exclusive wise, and they've criticized by so many people for how big their first party problem was compared to Nintendo and Sony's amazing output of exclusives. Now they're finally doing what people said they needed to do, expanding their first party studios, but then now that's a problem all of a sudden too, apparently.

Like, what do they want them to do then? Building every new studio from the ground up would take too long, we already don't know how long before we will be able to see something from the one new studio they did create called The Initiative. Plus it's not like Microsoft is forcing these studios to join them, they are offering and the studios are choosing to accept then.

They won't get creative freedom and they won't have a budget free from constraints. Be a very bad move for them and the industry. For the life of me I can't understand why Microsoft don't develop more studios of their own. They have the money, they're just too lazy to do it.

lol, this is what companies do. They buy talent. Maybe Nintendo is the exception. You’re a huge Sony fan, a majority of their big PS4 titles are from developers they bought, or games they bought. What is the difference?

Im utterly shocked that MS can’t win here on Chartz lol.

I highly doubt that those devs like living hand-to-mouth as an independent studio any more than the head, Feargus Erquhart, does. It's my understanding that there have been weeks and sometimes even months where the financial situation at Obsidian was so bad that they couldn't pay some of the developers until they got their next big in-flow of cash, either from a game's release or from a kickstarter. The studio has already had to downsize multiple times, if I was a dev there I would be worried about being in the next wave of layoffs. Being bought by MS means a steady, guaranteed paycheck and considerably more job security, even if does result in a loss of some creative freedom.

Yeah, the "grunts" would likely stay, but I strongly doubt it for the creative heads

MS killed Rare? How so? Are we talking about the same company that Nintendo sold off because they were losing there staff, and that there last masterpiece was Banjo Tooie? That a whole different story I guess.

No, their last masterpiece was Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Microsoft made things worse by making Rare release disappointing titles like Grabbed by The Ghoulies, Perfect Dark Zero, Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, and then Kinect games. Those blunders made even more Rare veterans leave the company, to the point where fan-favorite Rare games ended up being reduced to cameos and Minecraft skins.

Microsoft would do the same to Obsidian Entertainment. -_-

Those Rare games you mentioned on the Xbox were Rare with creative freedom, can you blame MS for putting them in the Kinect market after those average games? Rare actually made good games with Kinect just to note sadly.

Star Fox Adventures and Donkey Kong 64 which were average games at best and Nintendo selling Rare off kind of proves that Rare was at a downfall way before MS took over. Also there were Gems on Xbox as well with Kameo and Viva Piñata.

MS so far have done good things with Killer Instinct and hopefully the upcoming Battletoads. I wouldn't be blaming MS for Rares downfall. Rare got old and lost its way.

And just to prove my point, Yooka Laylee was made with creative freedom by the original Rare team with no MS involvement, the same original team behind Banjo Nutz n Bolts, and Yooka Layee sits on a (73 Meta) disappointing. Those wanting to blame MS for Rare's downfall are just those in denial. The real truth is Rare was losing its talent over the years. Nintendo knew this, and many needed to make an excuse for them as to why they went downhill.

I am a huge Rare fan and was a big Nintendo fanboy back in my early years of gaming. I wouldn't be saying this to downplay them, I am just being honest with my opinions about them.

SF Adventures and DK64 are some of the happiest gaming memories I have. Every SF game since that had been horrible or ok, and DK had reverted back to a shallow 2-d experience with no story.

I don't get why when Sony buys a studio its great an when Microsoft buys a company it's awful, especially when they are buying these AA type studios. Especially now in the spencer era when he's actually giving studios freedom creatively. For the people saying it's bad they won't be given much of a budget do you not realize that the games these studios have been making are making them on a very small budget as is and half the time they don't even know there own budget. What if PoE had 10 kick starters invest rather than thousands? Now Microsoft will just say what is your vision and then here is X amount of dollars. The only downside to any of these purchases is somy owners won't be able to play them, which does suck but that's sadly how this business works sometimes.

Now as for obsidian specifically they are having money issues so being bought by someone makes sense and Microsoft can give them a bigger budget than they've ever had to work with and the only time they've ever had a big budget was new vegas and that turned out well. Give them a green light for an RPG exclusive and that fills a big void in the Xbox lineup. It's a good fit imo

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time with SF Adventures and DK64 however they weren't masterpieces, not the Rare games I was expecting anyway. SF Adventures was a forced Rare title to carry the Star Fox name by Nintendo instead of its original direction of Dinosaur Planet and aside from its visuals (Something Rare does always good) the game fell flat on its face while DK64 got reviewed well but the Rare charm finally fell with me on that one. Than that's when we got Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Perfect Dark Zero.. Rare was totally lost in direction and needed help. Unfortunately like Sega and many other old great companies, you cant always help the fallen.

Get it done MS... and don't fuck them up.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).
