Microsoft rumoured to purchase Obsidian Entertainment

Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft rumoured to purchase Obsidian Entertainment

Gee, Microsoft purchasing a studio that's beloved for it's stellar line-up, THAT hasn't ended horribly before!

Now I gotta go do some GREAT IDEA myself, like eat cheese that has mushrooms growing out of it, or investing in Enron!

Some days I just blow up.

They won't get creative freedom and they won't have a budget free from constraints. Be a very bad move for them and the industry. For the life of me I can't understand why Microsoft don't develop more studios of their own. They have the money, they're just too lazy to do it

It's Microsoft.u can't expect anything less.

Do you guys have sources? or is this nothing more than assumptions because.. of no reason?

Mostly assumptions because Microsoft killed Rare.

Thought they did give Banjo-Kazooie a lovely present for their 20th anniversary. ^^ Minecraft skins. -_-

This is a win-win for sure. Obsidian's head has been trying to find a publisher to acquire them for well over a year, he said that he doesn't like the struggles than an independent studio has to go through just to stay in business. Meanwhile MS needs more 1st party studios for next gen, especially RPG studios, and Obsidian is just that.

Can this happen after they make another fallout

They won't be making another Fallout. Bethesda said in an E3 interview that they have no plans of letting an outside studio work on the franchise again. Now that Bethesda Game Studios has 4 different studios (Bethesda Maryland, Montreal, Dallas, and Austin), they are big enough to work on each of their 3 series (Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield) by themselves, they no longer have need of outside assistance.

MS killed Rare? How so? Are we talking about the same company that Nintendo sold off because they were losing there staff, and that there last masterpiece was Banjo Tooie? That a whole different story I guess.

Looks like I'll be buying an Xbox 2. They are making all the right moves, If this is true and they come out the gate in 2020 with the same moto and fpcus on games as Sony did (and a decent line up of games through to 2022) in 2013 9th gen will definetly be a teo console gen for me. Maybe even a 2 console gen if Nintendo give us a new Switch model that focuses only on handheld with a tad more power in the shell and slightly higher resolution and clean up their act along the way,fix their online service, Get back to moderating and curating games on the E-shop, give us external save data options among a few other things...now that I think on it, Nintendo aint going to do any of that. Bummer.

ITT: "This is bad because I personally don't like Microsoft because reasons".

Seriously? People always complain because Microsoft doesn't have many studios, so why are people complaining when they acquire one? Especially a studio with experience in something MS doesn't do often (probably a response to "Xbox has no diversity!"). I can understand not wanting to build a studio from scratch as it takes time, so why is there so much backlash when MS does exactly what people say they want them to do?

Obsidian is one of the oldest independent studios with a very dedicated fanbase. The studio had been formed when their previous company, Black Isle Studios (hence the name, Black Isle, Obsidian, geddit?) got bought up, which most employees didn't like one bit. You can be damn sure that a similar exodus would happen if Microsoft would buy Obsidian, draining the Studio off all it's talent. Basically what Microsoft would get would be a bunch of IP and nobody anymore to continue them.

Yeah, I really don't understand some people's logic here.

These past few years, hell even most of this generation, have been arguably the worst for Microsoft exclusive wise, and they've criticized by so many people for how big their first party problem was compared to Nintendo and Sony's amazing output of exclusives. Now they're finally doing what people said they needed to do, expanding their first party studios, but then now that's a problem all of a sudden too, apparently.

Like, what do they want them to do then? Building every new studio from the ground up would take too long, we already don't know how long before we will be able to see something from the one new studio they did create called The Initiative. Plus it's not like Microsoft is forcing these studios to join them, they are offering and the studios are choosing to accept then.
