Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony first Party games sales, A huge leap from PS3 era. ( Entered Ninty Level ) Update: GOW at 10m & Uncharted 4 16M

These sells are much more impressive......they have so much more competition from other AAA games compared to Nintendo which typically is only good for indies and their own games

The most impressive part is without a doubt the fact that they have so many IPs that are selling these numbers. Whereas if you look at Nintendo it’s always the same Mario and Pokémon, barring the occasional lightning in a bottle Wii Sports type success. And of course Zelda has finally broken the 10 million barrier after over 3 decades. MS on the other hand deserves no mention as they have ever only been able to make one 10 million seller and that was over a decade ago when Halo 3 did it.

Pokemon, Mario (kart, 3d, 2d), Zelda, splatoon, animal crossing, smash bros. With almost every  other franchise also having growth on the switch. Nintendo already have 5 games over 10 million  compared to sonys 4 (last of us doesnt count it counts ps3 + ps4) with a third of the userbase sony has in a much shorter space of time. Also a large portion of Sony's games are sold at a discount.

Also go back to the Wii/ds era and nintendo had 19 games sell over 10 million, 10 games over 20 million and 5 over 30 million. Don't get me wrong Sony is doing great and I hope they keep growing but they ain't anywhere near this level yet.

Spider man on ps4 is being sold on Amazon for the same price as Mario kart Wii $35. An almost 11 year old game is being sold at the same price as a game that came out about 6 months ago.

And amazingly, Mario Kart Wii has sneaked into Amazon's best sellers list a few times, showing incredible staying power after almost 11 years since its initial release.

The Wii has long passed its glory days, but MKWii continues to live on 30+ million and counting.

I'm sure someone has already said this somewhere in this thread, but I'm not reading through 250 comments to find it.....

there are two, very obvious, primary factors for this increase in sales of their first party title. First, is the fact that their systems has sold much better than last gen. that's obviously of critical importance to selling more games.

But, the other major factor, and the more interesting ones, at least to me, is that the quality of their games has greatly increased. Pretty much every AAA title they publish is 85+ metascore, and just generally very good, if not great. And, when people have confidence that every game you put your name on is going to be good, they tend to buy your games.

As a person that plays on all platforms, I hope that Microsoft will step up and join Sony and Nintendo with consistently great first party games. I am cautiously optimistic that they will get there soon. It will be a great era for gaming if they do (assuming Sony and Nintendo continue with their consistent quality).

TLoU doesn't count?

It had 7M copies sold on PS3 alone on its first year basicallyk like Horizon Zero Dawn) with the PS4 already existing for the most part of that time (driving the userbase away for the PS4), and it has now reached 17M copies sold, the PS4 version came after just that one year moving the original legs for it (like a GOTY edition).

It's not like it sold 1or 2 milion more copies of people who double dipped, TLoU was still very fresh and gaining traction, it was the game legs acting up.

It sold 10M more copies after it moved to PS4 alone.

No matter how you look at it, it counts, from any angle.

TLoU is the most successful exclusive game ever to not come from Nintendo.

I definitely think Halo in its prime is just as successful as TLOU, but sadly those days are long gone

It depends on your definition of successful.  But, in terms of legacy, general impact on gaming, and importance to the platform holder, Halo is definitely the most significant non-Nintendo first-party IP.  It's second only to the Mario family (though it is a distant second).

Halo has lost a lot of it's shine.  But, that doesn't erase how big of a deal it has been, or the impact it had.

Just like we must combine MK8 Wii U + Switch sales, super amazing number, agree.

A huge amount of people double dipped with the last of us. It's one of those games that almost everyone I know that bought it on ps3 bought it again on ps4. I'm sure it would be over 10 million if all it's sales were on just one console. But it wouldn't be close to 17 million. Are we going to say Mario kart 8 has sold over 23 million copies. How many copies of last of us were sold at full price? the game is currently $18 on Amazon.

Mario Kart got revived on the Switch, it was already 3 years on the market when it came, though that doesn't take any credit away from it, if it was good enough to interest the new audience on Switch and become successful on both platforms, well, that's great. It's not the same thing, tho.

The Last of Us moved its audience to the PS4, it released June 2013 if I recall it right, and the PS4 released November that year to steal PS3 thunder, the game didn't have half a year and its console was already not the focus anymore. It still sold 7m copies on its first year there regardless, in just one year being most of this time on a platform from last generation.

Then with that one year came the PS4 version and completely moved its audience from PS3 to there.

We are talking about a very different scenario here, TLoU legs moved platforms, exactly like GTAV, most of its potential sales moved platforms and picked the game there.

About your personal experience with people double dipping, mine is that neither me nor none of my friends that utterly loved it have got it again on the PS4, none. That's just it, personal experiences.

About the game price... that doesn't matter in the slightest, we are talking about sales here, and even then, PlayStation games have the healthy price drop as any other non-Nintendo games, it's absolutely normal for an almost 6 years old game to be a lot cheaper today than on release.

About its 17m sales... yes it would not reach it without the PS4, but that doesn't take away any of the game success from it.

If it was hold to release on PS4 day 1 as Nintendo did with Zelda, maybe it could have sold that, being a fresh game on the new platform with a stellar reception, instead of a game a lot of people had already played last gen. Did Zelda ever sell this well being on a single platform? No. So should I take that away from it because its also on the Wii U? No.

No matter how you look at it, TLoU sales naturally moved from systems, cutting short any of its sales because of that is doing the game a massive injustice.

I don't mean to offend you here, but this is the biggest load of nonsense I've heard on this site in a while. Your acting as if everyone literally migrated instantly from ps360 to ps4. The fact is most early adopters are going to be big Sony fans that in all likely hood already had the last of us on ps3. Just because it released on ps4 does not mean the entire potential audience moved to ps4. At this point the ps4 hadn't even sold 20 million yet. And most 3rd party games were still releasing on ps360.

I call bullshit on none of your friends rebuying the game. Either you have very few friends or your lying. If you said very few of your friends double dipped that would be more believable.

Of course price matters the whole point of this thread is that Sony are entering Nintendo levels with there ips. Nintendo games don't go down in price Sony games do. That has a big impact on sales. If Sony games could do these sales at full price then they would be on Nintendo's level.

The paragraph about Zelda doesn't make much sense. I don't know what your trying to say here.

I'm not trying to take away from the last of us. i m just saying the 17 million figure doesnt show the entire picture. Also the last of us is only one tiny bit of my argument. Probably the least important part of my argument.
