Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does anyone still think smash ultimate is a port?

It's a port of a new game.

Around the Network

A port :
Mario Kart : one new character and resolution 720p --> 900p

An "upgrade"
SSBU : twice more content than the previous, new game mechanics, ton of new option, texture mapping reviewed, 3D models refined a bit.

A new game :
Zelda BOTW : everything from ground, NOTHING used from Skyword or Twilight

Sorry, but this is incredibly silly criteria for a new game. You realize new games have been reusing assets from previous games since video games have been a thing right? Are we no longer calling Majora's Mask a new game because it was built from the exact same engine as Ocarina of Time? Smash Ultimate is a new game. Not a port, not an upgrade. Ridiculous anyone still thinks otherwise.

Also, why are some just ignoring that the game has been confirmed to have it's own new fighting mechanics and system than Wii U like every new Smash does? The controls have been said to be the fasted paced since Melee. That all on its own confirms it's a new game.

I assume its built from the previous game but lots of tweaks and new content.

Its Super Smash Bros 2K18.

Yes sorry : I DO on my name, confirm you that I don't consider Majora as a new game, it is a spin off, an "alternative Ocarina" entry in the series. They needed probably 5-6 times less ressources than what they needed to build Ocarina.

I mean, I don't think it's a bad thing per sé. But as far as I know, Ultimate does not have any new, original content. It's like Every Smash game packed together and remastered. Earlier entries all had new stages, characters and mechanics.

Where was Stage Morph, Squad Strike (I guess if you want to count the last part of Smash Tour), Smashdown, and the overhauled Training mode in previous games? What about New Donk City Hall, Dracula's Castle, Morray Towers, Great Plateau Tower, the new items, the new assist trophies, and the new Pokemon that we've seen during the latest direct? Where was all that Castlevania music, not to mention the new music on the website and few of the character trailers? Where was King K. Rool, Simon, Richter, Inkling, or Ridley (in his current Smash form)?

Edit: Couldn't spell Richter haha

I stand corrected. Nintendo said there'd no be new characters so I went off that, but apparently there is much more new content than Nintendo said there would be upon reveal.

Does anyone still really care what anyone else thinks about this game?

Doesn't look like a port in any way. Many fighting games come up with an Ultimate edition that contains fighters from across the franchise. Never heard anyone calling these "ports", neither now nor back in the 90s. Plus there are so many new things, content, graphical changes, gameplay changes, soundtrack changes etc that definitely show the development that has gone into this.

This thread should not exist. There are no arguments that would justify calling this game a port, and the discussions about what is and what is not a port are absolutely nonsensical.

By some of your definition of 'port', Majora's Mask is a 'port' or 'remake' of Ocarina of time.

By some of your definitions, Donkey Kong Country 2 is a port of The original.

Or Mario Bros The Lost Levels is just a port of Super Mario Bros.

Using assets from a prior game does not make it a port, whether they're modified/updated or not. I cannot believe this is a thread that has almost 100 replies. Some people just like arguing even when they're so clearly, definitely, unquestionably wrong.
