Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Smash Ultimate: Is Goku Actually a Possibility? Like Is it Really IMPOSSIBLE?

Smash Bro's is a celebration of Nintendo's own IP's and third party choices that have some sort of relevance to Nintendo. Why the hell would Goku be in smash? What is his relevance to Nintendo?

Well his two most recent games are on Switch...so there's that.

He still qualifies as a video game character.  Although for some reason I think Master Chief is a possibility now.  But only based on some recent good relations between MS and Nintendo in articles.  MS was visiting Japan I believe earlier this year with discussions, and who knows what all they were doing.

I think Banjo and Kazooie or Conker would be before MC.

As others have stated, Goku's potential presence isn't as unprecedented as you probably think. "lol if goku gets in it opens the door for naruto/whatever-rando-who-cares anime crap". No. What other anime character has had a 30+ year history with Nintendo, and overall cultural relevance that transcends weeb stuff? Hell, that's more than a lot of the existing roster. Not to mention the aforementioned consideration of James Bond for the original Smash.

Bandai Namco Studios is co-developing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Why is this relevant? Because they are the actual company in charge of the Dragon Ball franchise.

There's plenty of fuel that would lead to his inclusion; to simply write it off as a meme or silly pipe dream is a grand assumption without knowing the facts.

Now, do I think he'll make the cut? Probably not. In fact, I'd bet he won't even be DLC. But don't act like this is Shrek or something. It is definitely within the realm of possibility. It's just a matter of whether Sakurai is willing to lift the technicality of characters not originating from video games.

I'll argue that Naruto does. Naruto and Nintendo go way back even before the Storm series. But overall I agree, If Goku does get in its most likely to his influence and history more so than him being an anime character. Goku can be a possibility even if he isn't a video game character.

dragon ball fighting game is big right now...so it is still a possibility...

"he is an anime character"

"he is not relevant to nintendo"

yeah yeah.... if it gains enough traction sakurai wouldn't mind because it will generate buzz... as long as they get the rights to the character....

didn't a tv character negan end up in a fighting game? yeah nothing is impossible right now....

it is not like... here's goku in ssb... then people would be like... i dont like this game anymore... so yeah i still think it is a possibility... maybe not this gen, maybe in the future

I want to make clear I do NOT think Goku is possible. It would be too polarizing to devote one of the very, very few remaining possible character slots to an anime character. It would be possible to do in theory, more so than Shrek anyway, but not right now, definitely not. That said, in the spirit of this thread, here's an up and coming Smash Youtuber who's reasonably big in the Youtube Smash scene, reacting to the recent direct. At the end, he (jokingly, I believe) discusses the possibility of Goku in Smash Ultimate. His argument, summarized, is that the trailers seem to imply that if there is a story mode, there will be heroes and villains, and that therefore the trailers we've seen so far are actually from the story mode, and that therefore, Luigi, Mario, and Megaman are canonically dead. If they're dead, they'll need someone to resurrect them. Enter Goku. Also, that punch between K.Rool and DK looked like a straight up DBZ scene, and he makes the comparison between such a scene.

Discussion of hero and villain theme and possibility of Goku begins at 17:00, comparison of DK-K.Rool punch and Goku-Vegeta punch is at 18:40.

I will quit gaming if he makes it in.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Only after they run out of Nintendo characters to add, plus more deserving gaming icons.

We could have a Dragon Quest rep, if people really want something from Toriyama.

The biggest reason reason he shouldn't be in is because he IS NOT A VIDEOGAME CHARACTER, the moment you add him any non video game character could now be in and it's already bad enough with people asking for Goku and Shrek, despite the fact that neither is possible.

Also why the fuck is it that only Goku and DB get requested for Smash, because without the manga and anime nobody would care about them, because least be honest out side of a few games, DB games aren't good, there are non video game characters, like 007 and Batman, that have a better case to be a part of Smash, and even they should never allowed to be near Smash let alone in one.

Goku for Smash is just a stupid meme that should just die already.

Lucario was born in a movie.
Also the Assist Thropies Dr Kaashima and Dr Wright are "characters" from the real world (Both are persons).
