Can anyone explain to me how their free NES games work? Is it like PS Plus where they give a number of free games every month, but if you're not a member you'll miss out on those games?

I plan on getting my Switch in November so will I be missing out on the free NES games for the month of Sept and Oct?

They said that it would be like a Netflix-like service, where you can access all NES games added

Oh so I wont really be missing out if I jump into their service later in November, that's great to hear thanks!

But then I guess it'd be a bit sad that if there's an NES game you enjoy but will be taken down later.  I dont recall if they'll have these NES games for sale individually will they?

As for the service. Nintendo games the "save file" was saved to the game. Playstation 1 you saved to a memory card.  Wii U you saved to the hard drive, or a flash drive.

The switch can't save to the game card, can't save to a memory card, and can't save to a flash drive. So the only way to save a file is to A) PAY for the feature and B) hope it is supported.

This is a straight up embarrassment. The fact you have to even pay money to "back up" your games incase the switch crashes is insane. That not all save files will be compatible with the system is just down right high-way-robbery.

So for the benefit of being EXTORTED into having to buy a service(no matter the cost) the benefits I get are.. voice chat on my phone and temporary access to 30 and 40 year old games. We don't know which ones, we don't know how many, we don't know for how long.

Eh, save files are on the Micro SD card (if the game is there). I just upgraded my Micro-SD-card and copied everything, I could keep this on my HD. Well, except for the stuff saved on the internal memory. I think there is an option to choose, if Switch prefers SD-card or internal memory for saving, but once the file is saved, I see no way to change that.

From what I can tell it is just Netflix. You get access to what they offer at the time. No downloading, no keeping them. If a game rotates out - you lose access.  So basically worse than PS plus(where you keep it as long a you pay for the service) and way worth than XB1's Xbox 360 version(where if it is an xbox 360 game you keep it even if you stop paying).

Does that mean you'll need internet access to play these games?  Cant even download it like how Netflix lets you download movies/episodes?

If I always need to connect to the internet then this sounds less appealing to me now and will probably pass.

It's kinda funny seeing some people in delusion thinking they would get basically the same service as the Xbox Live or PSN when it's also basically 3x/4x less costly.

And also, about the justification for paying their online behind a paywall, it doesn't matter really if you say that you're into it for the "free" games" (Fallacy 101) or any sugar coating they've put on the side, you still fundamentally paying for the basic principle of being able to play online which in that regard Nintendo has been way more fair with it's asking price than the competition.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't want it to be free though ...

Whoa, totally not true, man.

I purchase my PSN subscription monthly ($10 per month), specifically on months that have games that I want. Most of the games I play are offline experiences anyways.

No, regardless of where you have the games downloaded to (System memory or SD card) the games save data is always gonna be on the console itself. That was pretty sweet for me recently, going from a 128gb > 256gb microsd card I managed to derp and wreck the file system of my 128GB card as I was going to transfer the games over... no matter though, just put in the new card and filled it via downloading instead, saves all nice and safe on the system itself.

Still though... would suck if my Switch broke off a rock or so, bye saves!

Hmm, looked at the folder I copied from the SD-card to my computer, and it contains a directory named 'save'. But it contains only four files and going into delete saves on my switch, I cannot find any save on the SD-card (if you select a title it shows where it is saved). So seemingly Switch prioritizes internal memory for saves.

which is sort of good and bad at the same time... the switch is a hardy device, far more capable of taking a bit of abuse than a micro SD card, that said.... having currently no way to get files off the device does mean that physical destruction or loss of the console means your saves are all forfeit.

A friend did once point out that it was a terrible thing because the switch screen could break so easily all the saves would be lost... the joys of a dock mean that fear is sort of unfounded though as you can put a switch with a destroyed screen into a dock and navigate to the menu to transfer your games and saves to a new system in Wifi range of the damaged unit... still though... things get lost in travel, especially things as small as the Switch, so I'm not a fan of having zero methods to back up the saves.

as for how tough the main body of the Switch is...

Yeah, agree about the option to backup saves.

And LOL about the drop test.

Indeed, I've seen mobile phones drop from armrests of chairs and be completely worthless after it, the Switch bounced higher than a person after it fell 1000ft onto concrete... and still worked. This video should basically be quoted anytime someone says "why did they use plastic on the Switch screen instead of glass?" Like... this... this is why!

But we'll see in the next few months when the Nintendo online network thing comes in how they'll handle cloud saves and online play for F2P games, the same as always with Nintendo, they've been in business since 1889 I give them the benefit of the doubt as they've been around for longer than 3 generations of my family.

By the way.

Do you have a Nintendo Switch ?

No, because I had a Wii U. So a Switch doesn't offer me anything new or special atm.
