Forums - Gaming Discussion - Games that won you over

For me is Hitman Absolution - when it was coming out I was buttmad like most Hitman fans because it looked like it was more of an action game than ever before, and they ruined the disguising with the Instinct mechanic which really worked only if you played the game on Easy. I played it a bit and ditched. But a few years passed and I gave it another try and turned out that it can actually be played with true stealth, it was just harder than before. I would rate it as solid 8/10. For me the highlight was the visuals, on PC on Ultra the game looked amazing.

Honorable mentions: Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Dirt3

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Witcher 3, played about 5 hours but the game seemed like it wanted me to look up the monsters I was hunting in the bestiary and then craft potions etc to counter them and I couldn't be bothered with all that. Then when I played it again, on the same difficulty as before, I found it way easier for some reason, and didn't need to bother with any of that.

Ocarina of Time, played the first 4 hours of the N64 version about 3/4 times over the years and never got any further, then a couple of years ago I played the 3ds version from start to finish and loved it, 18fps on the n64 was killing it for me.

A recent example is Prey. Played it for a few hours last September, but wasn't really feeling it. Put it down and came back to it in January and loved it

recently is FFXV for me. i love the traditional fighting in RPGs the turn based, and i hated about every one of them since after FFX. this one was fun once i got into it.

Was PAL region just 18 FPS? I've always thought the game was 20 FPS, but maybe I've been hearing a rounded number. I'm aware that games like Goldeneye run on a lower framerate on PAL versions.

And nowadays are all regions on 60 FPS now (or 59.88 or whatever it is?).

Yeah it's 18fps for PAL and 20fps for NTSC.

You replied before my edit went through. :P

And I remember not really noticing the bad FPS as a young kid very much, but nowadays many N64 games are very hard for me to play (those that are 20 FPS).

Final Fantasy 13 - The first 20 hours or so of the game really suck. I only kept playing it out of spite. I paid $60, day 1, and I was going to get my money's worth even though I hated the game. But then after 20ish hours the game starts to get better and better. In the end I played the game for over 100 hours and I was left wanting more. I would play through the game again, but I don't look forward to playing through the first 20 hours. Everything after that is pure gravy.

Twilight Princess - Similar story but not as extreme. Here the first 10ish hours are garbage. After that the game is pretty good.

Undertale - I liked this game the first time I played through it, but I had no desire to play it again. After much begging from my daughter we played it together again trying a pacifist run. It was then I came to appreciate just how much depth there was to the game and it made it to my top 50 of all time.

Resident Evil 7 - It was a bit odd and had too many cheesy horror movie tropes that weren't in the previous games, but it was a still a fun game and went back to the originals in some aspects.

I can think of two notable examples:
1) Dark Souls. I bought the game soon after release, played for around 10 hours and then just gave up. I just couldn't get into it no matter what, but then I decided to give it another chance a few years later, and ended up absolutely loving it. Now I consider it one of the best games ever made.
2) Resonance of Fate. A similar story with this one. Played for around 10 hours when it was release, but the punishing difficulty, complex battle system and the very slowly opening story eventually just drove me away. I came back a few years later and ended up finishing and really liking it. I think it's a seriously underrated JRPG from the previous generation.
