Well I didn't see a hole there, but by all means poke around =]

Make a thread on it =p

Just that you mentioned not seeing a downside to staying in school. If you could drop out and make millions or more, staying in school might actually be worse for you. Hard to say unless you know the exact situation, like you said, plus the future really. Not a gaping hole, but a hole nonetheless. You covered it mostly with the few who actually achieve it remark.

I was actually referring to this thread, where some seem to think the less context the better. I wasn't referring to you though.

Well if one knew the future for sure then yes, staying in the school instead of being millionaire could be considered a downside =~] still some would say they preffer knowledge than money.

I know you were talking about this thread, hence the smiley =p

Depends on whether their dream is to be smart or rich, if they can only have one or the other that is.

Guess your not the only one who was mistaken. O context, context! Wherefore art thou context?

If I were to choose I would get money that can buy me enough knowledge to have a great life.

Can't disagree with that.

My school is being remodeled right now and a month or so ago I had a dream that it wasn’t done when school started (next week, ugh). So, they wouldn’t let us in the building because it was still under construction. So in my dream, I took my students and brought them to my car which was very dirty (it always is). I then proceeded to teach them by drawing in the dirt on my car.

Do you guys think I should follow my dream?

Definitely. School needs some changes.

When I watch an awards show and an actress delivers a speech saying "follow your dreams", I have to swallow my own vomit.

She ignores the fundamental truth: she is one in a million. She got there through looks, talent, connections, etc. that the other 99.99% don't have. She didn't get there by "following her dreams" or "pursuing her passion". She got there because she had a nice smile/knockers, could cry on command, or her father owns the studio.

For every American Idol winner, there are thousands of people who simply can't sing and are too delusional to accept it. They then go on wasting their time trying to "follow their dreams" fruitlessly while watching other opportunities pass them by.

Why are there so many pansies who keep looking at the 0.1% and accept it as reality? NO, YOUR DREAMS WON'T COME TRUE. THEY'LL ONLY COME TRUE UNDER A VERY SPECIFIC SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES FOR A VERY SPECIFIC SET OF PEOPLE.

You can like something as a hobby, do it with your friends, and be happy. But be realistic. There are things you can do as a career and there are things you simply can't.

How about "follow your abilities" or "follow reality" or "follow opportunities" instead? Or how about get your head out of your ass and work for a living instead of fooling around with something that will never happen?

There is a special name for it.

Or, you know, don't dream random dreams that don't fit who you are, or really outlandish ones. If I dream to become President of the United States, I'll probably fail (though it looks more achievable than ever after 2016...). However if I want to be a politician, I could definitely do that. If I dream to reach the top of the music charts, I'll probably fail, though I have enough music talent that I could start a music career and not starve to death, I just wouldn't be at the top of any charts. If I want to cure blindness, I'll probably fail, because that's really vague and probably would be accomplished by a team of people. If I get the right education, however, I have the intelligence necessary to graduate with a doctorate degree in the right field to join a research team that would help develop a robotic prosthetic eye, and I would be able to say I contributed to a cure for blindness. I used to have that dream, and I could have achieved it, I was just too lazy. Achieving your dreams is a matter of having the right dream and being willing to bust your ass for it. Really incredible things take absurd effort, not just skill. But that said, you can't just dream anything, it has to be a dream that makes good use of your specific skillset. And yes, some people are hopeless cases with insufficient skills to accomplish anything incredible. Doesn't mean they can't live a happy life though.

Point is, the phrase "follow your dreams" is meant for people with sensible dreams that they're willing to work for, not a blanket statement that anyone can do anything because they just want to hard enough.

"Follow your dreams, but be prepared for reality" is a much better saying, in my opinion.

Yep much better, or "be prepared to failure and disappointment"
