Totally what we needed, even moar Smash! I just hope MasterOverlordGod Sakurai doesn't bore us to death with minor details again and instead we get substantial NEW content like a Boss Rush mode or a ham sandwich!

Did you really just ask 'what purpose does it serve' in relation to a presentation meant to share new details and elaborate on one of the most anticipated movies of this year? a game in a franchise that traditionally has a tonne of gradual buildup spread over the 6-8 months leading up to release? one of the best selling franchises in Nintendo's library? 

Really? 

I, for one, am excited to see what they show! Could it be new stages? NEw characters? New/returning game modes? Elaboration on how the online will work? there's a lot we DO know about the game, but there's a lot more we DON'T know.  Many people are looking forward to it because it is easily going to be Nintendo's biggest game this year (either that or Pokemon Let's go Eevee/Pikachu).  So what purpose does a Smash Bros themed direct serve? Many. It's not Nintendo's fault you can't be bothered to imagine a world that doesn't revolve only around you.

As long as there is no Great Maze, I’m fine with whatever Single Player campaign they have to offer. (Seriously, that sucked!)

I hope they announce some crazy out of left field mode just to troll people who think they know everything about the game, like, immagine a 3D fighting mode, not necessarily as balanced as the 2D one, but just there to add something new.

Uh, plenty things you wrote dont make sense, first I can bet we will have regular Direct next month,  second Nintendo stop supporting Wii after 4-5 years after launch, and third Wii U didnt had strong start. 

It may be that they have some new characters/stages to show for Smash but also because of the E3 Smash overload that pissed a few off, maybe this time it will be the exact opposite. From being a "Surprise" Direct ending up almost exclusively about Smash to a Smash direct which actually contains some other completely unexpected big game reveals. That would be awesome and would make up for the anti Climax the E3 direct ended up being.
