Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo focusing too much on DLC?

Nothing but praise was sung for Octo Expansion, and BotW's expansion was pretty meaty as well. That and Nintendo's already been doing a good job with GaaS multiplayer titles. As mentioned, Nintendo was bound to go down this path sooner, but it's not a bad practice on paper, especially since they're so adamant about only starting work on DLC after the base game is completed.

their DLC has been great so far, but we'll see if they can keep it that way

The way Splatoon is supported is awesome. Free updates including new multiplayer modes, new maps , new weapons, new gear, among other changes keep the game feeling fresh (no pun intended). It's exactly how DLC should be handled in multiplayer games. Octo Expansion is great, with a pretty good plethora of single player content

BOTW had a very meh first dlc pack, but the second one was excellent with the new shrines and the dungeon (plus the motorbike too). It added some backstory to the four champions too.

Super Mario Odyssey add a few things post launch (new photo mode options, new costumes, and balloon world). Not really that substantial, but free is free.
I don't own MarioXRabbids, but generally the reception of the DK Adventure DLC has been good, too.
Mariokart 8 just got BOTW Link plus the bike as a free update, with more updates likely to come.

I think Nintendo has done DLC great for the most part.

I still need to import my Gold Edition cart from the PAL region. That cart doesn't exist here in NA.

You mean for Mario+Rabbids? The DK DLC is not on the cart.

Yes, yes they are.

As long as both the game, and the DLC have a fair amount of content for the money charged, I'm ok with it.

Splatoon 2...one DLC

Zelda...One DLC pass

Xenoblade Chronicles 2...DLC...but so big it also gets a stand alkne physical release of said story DLC...

Fire Emblem Warriors...complete game with DLC

No I think Nintendo is fine. We get a lot of free content and the extra content is just that...extra. They are not going crazy with it, if so they would have milked BotW for much more than they did. These games are rich with content and we have yet to see a case where they are locking part of the main game behind DLC. People need to stop reading too much into it. If you want it, buy it. If not, don't. It really is that simple.

Now if we start seeing games with like 2 or 3 separate season passes...then we can worry.

While some of the DLC isn't quite my cup of tea (I'm not much for difficulty modes), I can't argue about free new fighters and stages. Honestly I am sort of hoping that Pokemon 2019 uses DLC to add to itself instead of remastered versions.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Nintendo is doing DLC to expand their games' lifetime sales. Rather than just playing the game and being done with it they want you to keep playing. In my eyes I think the DLC is fine. Thier hasn't been a time where the games felt incomplete.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

So far with the Switch it has been pretty good, some free updates and single expansions for complete games.

Hopefully it bodes well for Fire Emblem Three Houses if it has DLC, Awakening and Fates were pretty bad in that regard.

Yeah, I think so far Nintendo have done a good job with DLC on Switch - my big concern is Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Shadows of Valentia's season pass was more expensive than the base game, which is disgusting, really. The thing is, enough of the Fire Emblem fanbase seem willing to pay for this stuff, so I worry Three Houses is going to have another over-priced series of maps and challenges rather than a meaty, meaningful expansion, or appropriately priced content. Fire Emblem Heroes, for example, is Nintendo's biggest mobile money-spinner, having made $400 million so far.
