Forums - Gaming Discussion - How many AAA/AA games have you bought this year?

I've been using Gamepass for some AAA titles, so I won't put those ones on my list.
And I've also recently jumped onto a year subscription for Origin Access for some EA titles I like.

Sea of Thieves (Before I got on Gamepass).
Farcry 5 (PC)
Fallout 4 (PC GOTY Edition, had on Xbox One at launch).
Surviving Mars (PC).
Minecraft (Switch)

And planning to buy:
Forza Horizon 4 (This game is actually a 110% given, I pre ordered it).
Black ops 4 looks interesting. Last got BO3 in the series, and this one looks like a much bigger expansion. Going to wait for gameplay before I decide.

The list could be bigger, but I'm not counting games I got from subscriptions like Humble bundle, gamepass, or Origin/EA Access. Kinda wish I could of had more NS titles from this year, but the console has had no good releases.

Nintendo Switch FC: SW-6340-7643-4233 aka Renji

Steam: Lee Roid

The only AAA/AA video game I've bought this year was Vanquish(PC).

It's been a pretty cheap year so far for me^^

Hmm... it was a full $60 50 hour+ JRPG with full English/Japanese voice acting and a beautiful unique art-style using intensive enough visual and graphical effects to run at 720p 30fps plus it had a pretty lengthy development from Square Enix.

Definitely both quality wise and budget wise would consider it AA, A would more be on the likes of some mobile or indie games to me.

You kind of hit the nail on the head with the last part of your last sentence. It LOOKS like a mobile game. And, graphics are by far the #1 factor that determines a budget.  With it's 2D-heavy aesthetic, they would actually have to try to willingly throw away money in order to push the game into mid-tier territory.  Clearly, the AA games I listed are on a budget-level far above Octopath, but still far below AAA.

People seem to get pretty touchy when I point this out (not saying you are).  I'm not sure if it's because it's a Nintendo exclusive, or what.  I'm just calling a spade a spade, and want to see more Turn-Based games hit the mid-tier, full 3D world to explore, level.

it baffles me how you can look at gameplay footage from Octopath Traveller and say it looks like a mobile game or that this game isn't a AA game, especially when you have Trails of cold steel 2 in your own AA-list.

I don't understand...That's WHY I'm saying Octopath isn't AA.  You can't say those two games are on the same budget level.

One look at Octopath and one look at Trails of Cold Steel tells you that Trails of Cold Steel has a MUCH bigger budget.

Trails of Cold Steel has a bigger budget, but Octopath is AA. 3DS games are AA and Octopath is at least at their level.

Probably missing a few but off the top of my head -

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (sold it back)
Mario Tennis Aces
Sonic Mania
Kirby Star Allies (sold back)
Octopath Traveler
(most of the stuff this year is either carry over from last year or indies, not much for me on the AAA/AA front for the first half of this year)..

Probably pick up (though not necessarily this year):

Skyrim Switch
Dark Souls Remastered
Wolfenstein II
Far Cry 5
Smash Bros Ultimate
Forza Horizon 4
Blops 4
Fallout 76

Maybes:

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Life is Strange 2
Starlink
Soul Calibur 6

Zelda, uhh JWE, and DBFZ.

Not really a good year of AAA for me. A lot more indie games though.
