I have Dragon Quest 11 pre-ordered.

So far this year AAA/AA wise I think I've bought:

Fire Emblem Warriors
Pokken Tournament DX
Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy
Mario Tennis Aces
Crash Bandioot N Sane Trilogy
Octopath Traveler
I also bought the Season 5 Battle Pass on Fortnite if that counts since the game itself is free to download, I feel like mentioning it since its the game I've put the most time into this year apart from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The free to play library on Switch has really taken off this year.

This will more than double in the second half of the year, I've been trying to prepare my wallet for that. I've never even bought games this frequently before I got the Nintendo Switch, although a lot of that has to do with the fact I've access to a lot more money than I used to when I was younger.

That's below AAA and AA.  That's A.

For me:

AAA - None (I hardly ever buy AAA games, anymore)
AA - Trails of Cold Steel 2 (PC Port), Dragon Quest 11, Valkyria Chronicles 4

Currently Replaying: Baten Kaitos

I bought

Monster Hunter World
Dynasty Warriors 9

And I plan to get

Dragon Quest XI

Monster Hunter World
Wolfenstein: new order
Thats about it I think.
Planing on buying GOW, Strange Brigade, Wreckfest

Around the Network

Shadow of the colossus
Far Cry 5
God of War
Injustice 2
Tekken 7
Mafia 3
Mass Effect Andromeda
Knack 2
Bloodborne DLC
Hidden Agenda

Next up this year are :

Spiderman
Concrete Genie (is that counted?!)
Yakuza 6
Assassin's Creed Origins

Hmm... it was a full $60 50 hour+ JRPG with full English/Japanese voice acting and a beautiful unique art-style using intensive enough visual and graphical effects to run at 720p 30fps plus it had a pretty lengthy development from Square Enix.

Definitely both quality wise and budget wise would consider it AA, A would more be on the likes of some mobile or indie games to me.

Released this year

Still coming
Spider-Man

Darksiders 3
Hitman 2
Pokemon Let’s Go
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
(Probably forgetting something)

Old games or ports

You kind of hit the nail on the head with the last part of your last sentence. It LOOKS like a mobile game. And, graphics are by far the #1 factor that determines a budget.  With it's 2D-heavy aesthetic, they would actually have to try to willingly throw away money in order to push the game into mid-tier territory.  Clearly, the AA games I listed are on a budget-level far above Octopath, but still far below AAA.

People seem to get pretty touchy when I point this out (not saying you are).  I'm not sure if it's because it's a Nintendo exclusive, or what.  I'm just calling a spade a spade, and want to see more Turn-Based games hit the mid-tier, full 3D world to explore, level.

Currently Replaying: Baten Kaitos
