I don't know, things could go either way. All the news about it selling out and shortages could also make it a more wanted item, boosting its appeal, and sales potential. Trust me, Nintendo does it all the time :p

Seriously though, I am super glad this is doing well. I have played over 40 hours (which is a feat for my limited time) and I cannot seem to be able to put it down. More games like this, SE, or even better give us that FFVI remake.

I'm over 80 hours at this point. This getting ridiculous. I took my car in to get serviced on Saturday morning. They were like "it's going to be 2 and half hours" usually I would have bounced. I was told the tech, It's okay. I'm prepared. I sat in the lounge playing Octopath Traveler the whole time. Then I went to get my car detailed, played Octopath Traveler while I waited. Thankfully I have certified USB-C rapid car charger for my phone. I got my Switch batter down to 30%. I went to the mall to order some contacts. By the time I got back to the car, I hid the Switch under my seat, system was already back to 70%. Went to grab a bite to eat and by the time I got home the Switch was 95% full when I plopped it back down in the dock to keep playing. I used to laugh at those ads of people playing the Switch outside, etc. I basically lived a Switch ad on Saturday. I've never played my Switch in public before. I usually only use undocked mode when I travel to home to Virginia visit family or if there is something on TV, like a UFC event, and I want watch TV and play at the same time.

This story encapsulates everything I try to explain to haters about the Switch that they just don't get. It's so awesome being able to play games of this quality, with two joysticks mind you, anywhere I want. (Keep in mind, I never bought a Vita because by the time I was considering it, it's fate was pretty obvious, sadly)

But on topic, it's great to see a game succeed. It's pretty sad that it came as a surprise to Square-Enix, though. The demos download numbers and pre-order numbers must not have been a very good gauge for them.

A game with frontloaded sales sold out its first two shipments? Surely, it will now compete with the top contenders of its genre!

Seriously guys, Square underestimated the demand a bit, but that doesn't do anything to convince me that it's going to sell multiple millions. Maybe once you count digital it'll come close, but I still don't expect much. That's not to say it isn't a good game, because it is, but don't get your hopes up that it'll have Final Fantasy level sales, or even Paper Mario level sales. It'll be doing good just to get Xenoblade level sales.

Square Enix fucked up big time on this one, hopefully sales aren't too badly damaged by the shortage.

there are plenty of copies of it still available from the eshop last time I looked!

There's still a large group of consumers who will refuse that, like yours truly. If I hadn't gotten my pre-order copy, I wouldn't be playing it. I refuse the digital future and it's reinforced more and more as support for the digital shops on old consoles goes away.

I don't understand how people can say "wow Square Enix fucked up by under-shipping this!" and then follow that up with "wowzaaa this is gonna sell 3-4M !!!"
Like, is the contradiction in that not clear?

Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely possible! But I'm left wondering, do we know how much has been shipped out yet? I'm sure there's some data out there, so I don't mind an education.

Not saying this is the case.

But would be funny people accusing SE of under estimating the game by shipping let's say 500k and saying the game will hit 5M, but in the end it does 1M.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Judging from COMG alone no one expected this to happen!

Square- "Let's release a Final Fantasy type game exclusively on a home Nintendo console for the first time in decades."

Also Square- "I don't understand. How is this selling out?"

Oh I have no doubt it will do very well and I think 3M, hell even 4M, is possible!

I just think we need to calm down a bit.

Helding expectations in check is always better than deep diving in hype =p

It's not even really an accusation at this point, more a matter of fact; SE undershipped the game, it's in such short supply that SE themselves have publicly come out and apologized.
