DF's latest Retro piece takes a look at the evolution of water in gaming, from the 8-bit era through to the PS2/Dreamcast

What are your favourite examples of H2O in games, whether it be a particularly nice looking implementation, or a water themed level?

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Super Mario Odyssey has probably my favourite water in a game so far. Crystal clear and the ability to dive through and walk on it as well as cap-turing the cheap cheaps and octopuses to play as were particularly fun in it.

Final Fantasy XV Altissia. First time entering this city in-game was pretty special.

I don't really have the time to watch the video right now, but it focuses on graphics, right?

Well, water is great as an aesthetic element and it can make environments look really good and unique, but I can't think of a single instance where interacting with water (aka underwater or swimming gameplay) was better than regular play. Not a single time.

Had to do it.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I'll rate that video 8.8, too much water

rather cool video especially back in the 8/16bit era to see the tricks they had to go through to try to get any form of believable effect on screen.
regarding water in current gen games, I think nothing was as awesome looking as the first time you enter Zora's Domain in Breath of the wild, when it's locked to raining there because of the story aspect in effect but yeah... this picture doesn't do it justice really.

The way water just runs off every surface around the place, including your character as well... it's just beautiful.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Gotta hand to Sunshine's ingenious way of implementing water for it's time

Some titles come to mind. From dust was great fun to play with the water, sand and lava. Pixeljunk shooter had great water game play as well in 2D. The most fun was in Duke Nukem 3D hiding in the water. You can't see in or out of the water yet you can shoot in and out. Fun hide and seek gameplay trying to guess where the other is using sounds as a clue, or dare to jump in or out and be seen.

But you are right about swimming. I haven't met a single game yet where it wasn't frustrating at some point, not even Abzu which I never finished.
