Forums - Politics Discussion - London has become the most bigoted region in the UK

Londoners least liberal on homosexuality and pre-marital sex

London is known as a bastion of liberal values. But by some measures the capital city is less progressive than you might think.  Findings from the British Social Attitudes survey found that residents were the least likely to say that pre-marital sex and homosexuality were rarely or never wrong.

Just 73 per cent held this view about sex before marriage and 67 per cent about same-sex relationships.

The trend is despite London having the largest proportion of gay, lesbian and bisexual people in the country.

Researchers said the regional variations were down to "religious differences" between different areas of the country and Londoners' social conservatism was "largely driven by religious factors".

The statement you make in the title straight up does not appear in the article. A quick computation (based on a 47% religious figure, in the UK), will even tell us that London performs better than the national average.

The astute reader will also notice that the posted image does not appear in the article, and has rather limited relevance, with a intolerance of around 30% and a muslim population of around 12.5%.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

Bigoted is not really a suitable word to describe the city. It's less progressive in some sense but not bigoted. "utterly intolerant of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own." is the key part of it. Any place or group that opposes free speech could easily be called bigoted.

Let's pretend you care about LGBT people and we don't filter info, you can find worse to equal numbers in the south of the US (which has few muslims), which pretty much hold the same religious inspired opposition to those same issues. Guess that's what religious people do. Also, Palou is pretty much on point.

Your agenda is showing

Yours is too. And the agenda of all the other leftists in this thread who immediately run out to defend multiculturalism instead of addressing the modern problems of London.

When I was a child it was a dream to visit London one day, but since then so much has happened that I will never travel to this place. To me London simply is not England any longer.

Haha, a foreigner complaining about the fact that a city is friendly to foreigners.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The expected part of a larger trend, although an incipent one.

The same views are held by the native whites that are more religious and have more children. A few generations back this demographic feature didn't exist, but now the gap is large enough that religious apostasy won't be enough to sustain the secular trends on the western world. Combined with high immigration and birth rates of conservative muslims and africans, do fully expect to see a slow but sure shift away from more progressive politics in Europe in a few decades or so.

This is already predicted by demographers such as Eric Kaufmann and those at the Pew Research Center. Eventually, there should be many examples akin to the shock of California Proposition 8, but with whites more strongly voting along religious rather than age brackets. I have no idea how more liberal parties would react - back to opposing immigration, like in the 70s and 80s, but on ideological lines rather than employment concern? Who knows.

It's funny, in a world with people like Geert Wilders, that it's those immigrants the most likely ones to bring Europe back to the "good old days" of family values etc.

You have a good point, but Geert Wilders was a bad example since he is a classic Western liberal who is worried that mass migration will threat the democracy and our liberties we've fought for for centuries, like the rights of women and sexuel minorities.

'Bigoted' seems like a huge exaggeration here, as others have already pointed out.

I love the current trend of making issues way bigger than they are.
London not very progressieve, the whole city is bigoted
Israël doesn't acknowledge Arabic any longer as an official language of their country, Appartheid all over again.
Trump does something, the new Hitler
It almost makes is forget that there where times with much bigger issues than ours and yet we whine way harder about it.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
