Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Unreal Engine update for Switch includes significant optimizations and improvements

Unreal Engine received a new update. The tech now runs at version 4.20, and includes significant improvement for Switch development. Epic says it has brought about “tons of performance and memory improvements built for Fortnite on Nintendo Switch to all Unreal Engine developers!”

  This includes the following:

  • Support for Dynamic Resolution and Temporal Upsampling
  • Low Latency Frame Syncing for Controller Input
  • Significant CPU Rendering Optimizations
  • Improvements to Threading
  • Better Texture Compression
  • Support for Memory Profiling
  • Backbuffer support for 1080p while in docked mode
  • And many other fixes!

This are some quite good optimisations for Switch.

Excellent to hear! Hope to see this pay off in the near future.

Maybe now Square can finally start porting Dragon Quest XI. But seriously though, it sure is taking a while, at least a screenshot would be nice by now. This is also great news for future UE4 games on the Switch, hopefully it means we'll get more ports. Spyro, Psychonauts 2 and the next Crash game (I'm assuming it'll use UE4 like Spyro) would all be wonderful to have.

this makes it sound like Unreal Engine 4 games will have significantly better/more stable visuals going forward on switch. CPU improvements should lead to better performance. Texture compression should lead to better textures. 1080P support is 1080P support. Not sure what memory profiling is, but from what I can tell it sounds like a way to ensure more efficient use of RAM.

Nice to see this, it will help development quite a lot. Also, will this make the Dragon Quest XI port easier?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I am just about done expecting anything from Square Enix on the Switch version until after the PS4 and PC launch in the West. They probably put inadequate resources to porting the game and had to restart once they saw how well the Switch has done and what it is capable of. In either case we are likely to get either a bare bones port of the PS4 version or an enhanced edition.

I guess this will make many 3rd party devs quite happy, it could even help struggling projects to be completed.

Hopefully this will result in more devs bringing their UE4 games to the platform.
