Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would you buy, refund or boycott a game out of political spite?

My purchasing decisions would be effected my a political action, event or group...

Yes. 12 21.43%

No. 24 42.86%

To some extent. 14 25.00%

Not so far but maybe. 5 8.93%

Comments/Indifferent/Middle America... 1 1.79%

Total:56

Unless the money made from the game was going directly to something I strongly disagree with I couldn't care less.

I buy what I want. If they get overly political with the story or plot to where it annoys me, it affects my enjoyment of the game and I pass. It would have to be obvious catering or truly horrific to make me not want to play it.

Thing is, there are plenty of other games out there to accept something that you would not be satisfied with. I would not call it boycotting so much as it would be passing in favor of something that interests me more.

I've ignored games that have been censored, but not full out boycotts or anything like that.

Of course not! My entertainment is meant to entertain me. If something is good, I'll buy it. If not, then I won't. Political affiliation and/or opinions don't and shouldn't factor into that.

Denying yourself good entertainment because of outside factors is just silly, in my eyes.

Maybe, I mean if someone is going to come out and say please don't buy this game if you support X, something I support then I won't buy their game. Why would I want to give them any money to further their self righteous nonsense?

If I buy something, I intend to enjoy it. If I decide not to but something (ie: another WWE game) it's because of a bad experience. I don't really have time to energy to think too much about a piece of plastic or a particular company, these days.

When you say internal politics I'm gonna guess that means internal struggles and such within a company, if so think back people to the stuff related to Konami and Kojima, can you honestly say that all that bad PR didn't in some ways sour you to the thought of future purchases of your Pachinko machines from Konami?

For me as long as the internal politics doesn't spill over and damage the games development then I'll mostly try to ignore it, but say for example the things going on in the background of Mighty Number 9 were hard to overlook when the backstage politics were clearly having an impact on the games direction and stiffling the original image that the Kickstarter put forward, going from being the 2016 version of Megaman.... to instead being Megaperson so as to be more PC, that was painful to watch and it did make me just turn off to the concept of buying the game before it launched. (did get it from psn+ a year later, glad I didn't pay for that)

Yeah. That and also things that effect the gaming industry and the titles being worked on. Stuff like Konami and yhe Jessica price situation or Manveers Hiers views creating an enviroment of diversity hiring as opposed to something confined to the gaming press for clickbait like the Kingdom come deliverence lack of coloured people. People completely misinterpreted the thread, some because of the title and most, probably because I worded it badly.

Offtopic a second btw, but from the OP line of "my phone keyboard is glitchy" do you encounter a bug where the auto correct replaces words after you've typed them on this site? Like where auto correct effectively makes shit of your post if you let it do its thing on here.

Edit - I will admit after hearing people complaining that Kingdom come deliverance had those "issues" I am actively looking to buy a copy for the ps4 :D

I only tend to do so whenever a dev does a bad port job or takes on bad business practices.

EA is pulling crap with BFV, so I'm more likely at this point to ignore BFV while also going back to playing BF1 and possibly Warframe in the future. I've got other MP FPS games to play at the end of the day. Voting with your voice can work for smaller devs because they either have to listen to you or would love to, while publishers are big enough to ignore a handful of fans, but not an angry mob consisting of a few hundred thousand to millions.

That being said, voting with your wallet is more or less a numbers based movement. If you vote with your wallet and you're 1 out of say ten thousand people, chances are high that your vote (as important as you thought it would be) was worth nothing and did nothing to change anything. When a lot of people do the same as you do, then it's just going with the flow of what the bigger crowd wants to change. If your vote is against not buying a game with using bad practices, and millions do the same, then the chances are very high that changes will be made.

I'll still vote with my wallet, but I know enough that my one vote will never count unless it's joined with a larger number. Me voicing an issue with an indie dev isn't as likely to change the whole game, let alone a part of it. Same goes for the large publishers out there.

Also, I don't really care for Jessica Price and her crap, but I'm not going to stop buying games just because she happens to be in among the other staff working on the game, as I feel that would be stupid, not to mention pointless (and it actually becomes scummy when you look at the intent and big picture of what a few people would love to do to another's life if they had the chance).

Edit: Considering how I just found out that Tinybuild games has blocked me on Twitter after voicing concerns over them as a company, I guess I don't have to support their games in the future going forward.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Good heavens no. Games are for fun. If a game is fun to me I will play it. I couldn’t care less who made it. They certainly aren’t going to notice at all if I do or do not pay for or play their game. It’s a pretty pointless statement to make and all you are doing is depriving yourself of the potential fun of playing a good game...
