The simple fact of the matter is that there are no popular trans actors or actresses. Why act surprised when a movie studio casts a popular A or B list actor or actress like Eddie Redmayne, Chloe Sevigny, or Scarlett Johnannsen to play a trans character as opposed to a nobody trans actor/actress who lacks the ability to put people in the seats at the cinema/theater the same way that a A or B lister can? Hollywood will do what makes them the most money.

Because it makes money doesn't make it right.

And just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

As someone that's part Japanese I find it offensive when a non Japanese person plays the role of a Japanese person.

I hope that you're being sarcastic. Who cares what you find offensive as a part Japanese person. I'm part Japanese as well and I don't think any of it's offensive. We're not monolithic. "As a _____ person" doesn't mean shit especially in this situation. Japanese like any other culture copy other countries' films or books then cast all people from their own country. It's normal and okay for any country to do.

Exactly. The fact is this is only ever used as virtue signaling. If it really bothered people, they would be upset when a white character is turned into another race. Or like you said, when other countries adapt books or other films and cast actors from their country, instead of being faithful to the source. Hell, even Attack on Titan made it clear that being Asian was rare, but that didn't stop them from casting all Japanese actors for the film. Where's the outcry from that? Nope, it's only ever brought up when it's the evil white man "stealing" from another culture.

Transgender? Predestination is one of my favorite mindfuck movies that stars a non-transgender actress playing a transgender character.

I am the black sheep     "of course I'm crazy, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong."-Robert Anton Wilson

wow the stuff ppl get riled up about just wow

Yes, but presentation means everything in a movie, especially in an adaptation of something in the case of GitS. Why do you think there was so much backlash when Christian Bale, a white man was cast to play Moses in Exodus: Gods and Kings? To that end, it would make a shit ton more sense to get somebody who actually looks like a man to play a trans man.

Inb4 "but she's playing a biologically female character, hur hur".

Nothing in the Ghost in the Shell 1995 film made the Major seem overly Japanese. It just happened to take place in Japan. That's it. Most Japanese cartoons do not put a heavy emphasis on making characters look Japanese. Because it's a cartoon, it's just an abstract approximation of what humans "look like". The complaints about GiTS are really ridiculous. Her race was never that important to the movie.

......her race was never implied, but Kusanagi is a Japanese name lol.

?

My comment never said she wasn't Japanese, so I don't really see what is "lol" about that comment. In fact, I would have assumed you took from that that I thought she was Japanese, doesn't saying that she doesn't seem overly Japanese imply that she still is Japanese?

I don't like SJ, she should have stuck with superhero movies, GITS was awful, totally disrespectful to the original (Batou whiny puppy lover ? WTF ) and should not bear the name at all, I had better stuck hot needles in my eyes than go and see that cinematic monstruosity

The crying about cultural appropriation is just as dumb now as it has always been.

What I personally react to is, I've looked up pictures of this guy she's supposed to be playing, and she looks absolutely nothing like that person, in any way. That doesn't mean she'll do a poor job, but at least initially it seems like poor casting.

So if Scarlett Johansson playing a transgender character is such a big issue, why was Felicity Huffman playing one in Transamerica fine, or Sarah Snook in Predestination, or Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry? This whole thing is just an outrage over nothing.

...Perhaps I'm just missing something, but I'm kind of getting the impression that this could hardly be handled much better. At the very least, this doesn't seem like it deserves an outrage, even if there is something to criticize.
