Huh? What's the issue?

The issue, if there is one, is that at this point in time people love to be outraged.

This.

So is she playing a man-turned-woman or woman-turned-man? I don't understand!

Wow, they never learn, do they? First she plays an Asian character as a white chick in Ghost in the Shell and now this shit? Get the fuck out of here! And it's got the same director from the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie, too (Rupert Sanders).

I guess she learned nothing from all the backlash her whole whitewashing controversy got in their other movie, LOL. Which BTW, it was a shitty movie even on its own terms, even looking past the fact that Sco Jo isn't an iota Asian no matter how much pale makeup they put on her.

She never played an Asian character in the Gits movie. Did you watch it or did you just assume?

She is playing as a woman who turns into a man. So she is playing the right gender for the role but OP's probably is Scarlett looks too feminine and sexy to be someone who would fit that role as all trans people should be butch and ugly? I think that's what I'm getting from this thread.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Yes, but presentation means everything in a movie, especially in an adaptation of something in the case of GitS. Why do you think there was so much backlash when Christian Bale, a white man was cast to play Moses in Exodus: Gods and Kings? To that end, it would make a shit ton more sense to get somebody who actually looks like a man to play a trans man.

Inb4 "but she's playing a biologically female character, hur hur".

Nothing in the Ghost in the Shell 1995 film made the Major seem overly Japanese. It just happened to take place in Japan. That's it. Most Japanese cartoons do not put a heavy emphasis on making characters look Japanese. Because it's a cartoon, it's just an abstract approximation of what humans "look like". The complaints about GiTS are really ridiculous. Her race was never that important to the movie.

As someone that's part Japanese I find it offensive when a non Japanese person plays the role of a Japanese person.

I don't see the issue. Why cast a no name, nobody trans actress to play a part like this when you can cast an award winning actress like Scarlett Johannsen? Big names put more butts in the seats at the theater than nobodies do.

If you're transgender you shouldn't be playing one. Similar to how non black people shouldn't do blackface and play the role of a black person.

The simple fact of the matter is that there are no popular trans actors or actresses. Why act surprised when a movie studio casts a popular A or B list actor or actress like Eddie Redmayne, Chloe Sevigny, or Scarlett Johnannsen to play a trans character as opposed to a nobody trans actor/actress who lacks the ability to put people in the seats at the cinema/theater the same way that a A or B lister can? Hollywood will do what makes them the most money.

Because it makes money doesn't make it right.

With the short hair, she is pretty androgynous.

I hope that you're being sarcastic. Who cares what you find offensive as a part Japanese person. I'm part Japanese as well and I don't think any of it's offensive. We're not monolithic. "As a _____ person" doesn't mean shit especially in this situation. Japanese like any other culture copy other countries' films or books then cast all people from their own country. It's normal and okay for any country to do.
