Wasn't she at the women's march in the US, shouting in the microphone along with other celebrities? I'd imagine she'd get support for taking such a role, depicting an oppressed and oft misunderstood group, I guess not.

Yeah, because every lead in Hollywood is going to homosexual transgenders...oh wait.

Maybe it's because most roles go to heterosexual natural genders since that's what the main population is comprised of. But people are making a stink about the casting, because this is one of the few times a role that would best be portrayed by a transgender actor (trans actors exist, you just don't see many because the roles don't exist) instead goes to a high profile straight cisgender actor that probably wouldn't do the role justice.

And this isn't about "giving" the parts to trans actors or devaluing merit of straight ones. You can't tell me that SJ would do a better more believable job as a trans character. She's not the worst, but she's definitely not one of the better actors. Nobody complained when Cate Blanchett acted against type and played Bob Dylan...because she can act. Same with Jared Leto and Eddie Redmayne playing and winning Oscars for trans roles.

Your comment is similar to when white cisgender males complain about being the new persecuted identity when in reality they are still on top of the social ladder in most cases. Other groups just want to share a piece of the social pie. It isn't a crime to be straight, cisgender, white or male. These groups just think this because for the first time in our history they have to share the air. It becoming a crime to be at the top is just nonsensical sensationalist rhetoric.

Then by all means get a man to play a trans man. And presentation means everything in a movie, it makes 0 sense to get somebody who doesn't look a smidge masculine to play a trans man. Same reason why everybody was so up in arms about Christian Bale, a white man playing Moses, an Egyptian, or for that matter, Scarlett Jo, a white chick playing Motoko Kusanagi, an Asian chick in GitS.

I will say anyone who got uppity about this should go do some self reflection for a while to figure out just what is wrong with them that they felt it was necessary to harass a woman who is just climbing to the top of Hollywood. I would have thought SJWs were all about empowering women, but this in combination with the London Pride Parade just shows that the left is positioning itself for autocannibalism.

It's perfectly possibly that the Makoto in the film IS Japanese, but she's using a Caucasian Shell. If you're going to be upset about something, do your damn research first.

 

And no, you don't have to be the same gender/race/orientation/etc as someone else to properly play the role. Actors are quite literally pretending to be what they're not. Children have pulled off very convincing serial killers, and I feel like Jo could pull off a trans pretty damn easily because she's a solid actor. Next you're going to tell me that only soldiers know how to play soldiers in movies, or how I keep setting up strawmen when in fact I'm just inconveniently tearing your argument apart with simple comparisons.

Oh yes, nevermind that it already had toxic word of mouth going in because of said controversy. Even Paramount themselves believe it played a role in the film's failure. 
Likewise with GhostBusters 2016: if you seriously don't think the extreme backlash it already had months before release contributed to it flopping hard (well-deserved), I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell to you.

The crazy part is that there are a lot of Trans you would never know they were men until the junk is shone.  The ideal that a Trans will still look like a man shows just how much a lot of people here probable never seen one.  Yes there are ones that definitely still look masculine but there are also a lot where they do not.  Either way, it seems funny that people complain about an actor doing their job.

Its more about attaching a star to the movie. That plays a big roll on funding or if the movie even gets made.

But I agree, she's just an actress and she took an opportunity. But this is Hollywood and they've taken the stance they must pander to the whiny left.
