Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why console crossplay will mean nothing in the long run

I just don’t get the whole conversation. You read articles that paint Sony as a villain, they trash them for not accepting a crossplay platform as standard and call it anti-consumer. As a consumer of the PlayStation 4, I don’t give a crap if I can play with other platforms. In fact, when I play on PlayStation i’m pretty sure I’m playing against people with some form of PS4 controller. I have never had trouble finding a host in MP on the PlayStation unless the service was down. Then I’d go play on Xbox live.. I don’t see what the issue of being a closed platform is. Not the way these people rant and rave about it. Like a bunch of communists lol. NO BORDERS NO NATIONS! NO BORDERS, NO NATIONS! Piss off lol.

I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person that actually applies to.

You are far from alone my friend.

I honestly don't give a fuck what Sony thinks. We all know they are doing this to help their bottom line because the idea of people playing together could harm sales (which it potentially could, but honestly not significantly enough to harm the brand). Good to see Microsoft and Nintendo being more open minded nonetheless.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

The issue is simple: people want to be able to play with others independent of platform. The issue has become a very prominent one ever since Sony's adamant opposition to crossplay may have resulted in their hijacking Fortnite accounts.

I get that but what is all the anti-consumer crap though? It’s never been an issue, “oh well X company doesn’t support that so I will buy it on something else”. There are endless issues that end up like that, why so militant all of the sudden? Because of fortnite? Lol

Sony allows crossplay with PC and mobile

Your Fortnite vbucks on PS4 can be used on PC/mobile but not X1/Switch.

X1/Switch can be used on PC/mobile/eachother, but not PS4 (which is Sony's fault)

Sony is shitty for not allowing crossplay, but MS gain nothing from it next gen as Nintendo will no longer be a factor.

MS blocks F2P games behind XBL Gold, which will always be a disadvantage until they drop the practice.

One is not more or less shitty than the other.  One simply will have little to no impact while the other still has you paying for F2P games.

The is a lot of impact if you own both a Switch+PS4 like many people do. You say next gen it will be to late but thats just kidding yourself, the damage to Sonys rep will already be done before next gen even starts at this rate.

I have a Switch and a PS4, I still plan on buying a PS5 because of Sony's exclusives.  Did not affect me, won't affect many others as well.  I currently do not have XBL Gold nor PS Plus, yet I can play Fortnite online on PS4.

There are arguments on both sides of the coin.  As I said, Sony would have to drop the ball somewhere else because as it stands, PS and Switch are the best combo for exclusives (especially if you like Japanese games).  Sony has too much going for them to be marginally affected by something that will not even be a factor when the new consoles drop if they keep saying no.

PR will not change anything for MS without someone for the their nextbox to crossplay with.  PR does not crank out quality exclusives.

You know what does?  Japanese dev support and Sony's 1st and 2nd party studios.  To believe anything else is fooling yourself.

It's an issue now after PS4 owners purchased a Switch and tried to access their Fortnite account on the Switch only to find out that Sony has hijacked the account.

It's not only bull that it has happened at all but also cause for concern for any other third party accounts that go anywhere near Sony's network.

We all have our companies that we like. It's human nature.

I like Microsoft and I'll defend Kinect to this day as something I enjoy on my Xbox One.
I like Nintendo and if anyone asks me, the Wii U is a great console and the Switch is powerful enough.
I like Sony and I don't mind plugging in a USB to charge my controller because of the abysmal battery life. I'll defend the Vita until my last breath.

And you know what? I'm part of the problem. If your company does something wrong, it's your obligation to complain about it. You aren't doing your fellow gamers any favors by making excuses. Yes, everything I listed above is something I truly believe but, for someone else, that could be a point of concern! If someone says "I don't like Kinect. I shouldn't have to pay for it." I shouldn't be trying to convince them how great Kinect is. That's hurting them and that's hurting Microsoft. If someone feels that the Switch isn't powerful enough, I shouldn't be trying to convince them that everything is fine because I don't care about power. My concerns are not exactly THEIR concerns. Still, their concerns should not just be dismissed.

People have an issue with Sony's handling of cross play and their accounts with a multi-platform game. Let them complain. Let them be heard and let Sony fix it. It'll only make the brand better. Just a year ago you'd have people saying that they didn't want external HDD support for the PS4 even though the Xbox One and Wii U offered it. They'd say "It'll allow for piracy!" or "It'll ruin the sleak design of the console" or "I can just delete my games when I'm not playing them."

What the fuck?

Think about other people and their issues. Quit blindly following a single company and acting as their unpaid Public Relations representative. If gamers are unhappy and companies listen, it's better for everyone.

HDD support isn't a great example unfortunately. There were defenders, but it's not like PS was going to lose money over it. They obviously didn't have plans for an 8TB SKU. They also aren't big in the external market, and they sure don't advertise it much, so in terms of money it certainly wasn't a problem for them. Bending when it comes to aesthetics is much easier than when it comes to cold hard cash. PS could have been much more lenient and I do agree it took them too long to come around in this particular case.

There is the factor that PS4 owners no doubt must think about, as well as PS themselves, as to how many consumers will buy other consoles instead and how many existing PS customers will switch brands if cross play is allowed? If this number is potentially large enough, that's less money to make PS5 as impressive as it could be, and less money to make blockbuster exclusives that would make Spielberg say wow. If less money for PS means a lesser PS5 and weaker exclusives, it's not exactly better for everyone. This does and doesn't help XB and Nin fans. It will force them to continue to up their game more and more to try and catch up, but as long as they are behind, their gamers will be less well off.

Greatness for everyone is a tough line to draw and even harder to walk.

I find it funny how F2P being locked is somehow a bigger issue than millions of plaeyrs being able to play with one another.

Honestly with everyone else but Sony being on board, Sony's side seems like the bigger issue, and other devs are talking about it. Both are shitty, but Sony being the last player in crossplay is becoming more of an issue by the day.

Lets assume like 5% of players would actually make use of cross play, on the PS4 side.
I really doubt the number is much higher than that.

Sure that ll be "millions" of players.
The same is true for F2P being locked behinde a paywall on the XB1 though.
Theres probably a good ~40% or so, out of those 39m Xbox Owners that dont have access to fortnite at all, because MS isnt allowing them it.

Why dont you hear epic bitch about MS being hurting their sales or MAU numbers by locking players out?
This crossplay thing is overblown.

"I find it funny how F2P being locked is somehow a bigger issue than millions of plaeyrs being able to play with one another."

You really dont think its a bigger deal? Its hurting all the xbox owners that bought a xbox, but cant afford to pay the subscription, but want to play Fortnite and such games.
Its also hurting the devs that make fornite, their market reach is smaller because of MS chooseing this.
That number is probably muuuuuuuuch bigger than the PS4 owners that wish they had crossplay with xb/switch.

Putting Fortnite behind the Live paywall no doubt has to do with it's competition with PUBG. Imagine what Fortnite could do to PUBG if it were actually completely F2P. MS didn't invest and lock down PUBG to see it flushed down the drain like some previous game investments already. Guard your investments is the name of the game.

So here's what I've gathered:
-Sony doesn't allow cross play with any other platform except PC sometimes.
-If you make a Fortnight account, your purchases are stuck on PS4 but the other platforms allow you to switch back and forth, leveling up, keeping your purchases, etc.
-Microsoft won't let you play F2P games online without a subscription. PS4 does allow you to use their online service for F2P games.

A.)Either Microsoft is wrong for requiring the subscription or Sony is really generous.
B.)Either Sony is (are?) being selfish by not allowing people to keep their content or Microsoft/Nintendo/PC are being generous with this one particular game.
C.) Sony is being selfish by not allowing people to play popular games like Rocket League and Fortnight with gamers of other platforms.

We have a couple of different issues here. People seem to be using the logic that "It's okay because it doesn't effect me and my enjoyment" or "It's okay if my company does something wrong because this other company does something entirely different that is also wrong."

Do I have this right?

I'd add that PS made a major mistake, and it's not precluding cross play. The smartest thing they could have done, based on the fact they clearly don't want cross play, not yet anyway, would have been to go on the offensive again and mimic what they already did with game sharing. Sitting back and being silent makes them look weak and gives the impression they are wrong and they know it.

They should have came back with points like Fortnite, an F2P game, being behind the Live paywall. If that wasn't enough, they should have came out with a public PR statement that was almost identical to what XB used back when they weren't allowing cross play with the 360, and made it clear they were taking a shot back at MS. The memes would have flown and would have been against XB instead of MS and Nin banding together and taking the meme war to PS hard.

Sony hijacked it how? Your level doesn’t carry over to other platforms? Does it do that on other platforms? I don’t play fortnite so I have no idea I’m just trying to understand. That’s not really “crossplay” though. That’s more like the cross save between PlayStation and vita. Has Sony ever did this with other platforms?

You can transfer content and progress between PC and mobile via your Epic account. You can also carry it between PC, mobile, Xbone, and Switch. But any account you’ve ever logged onto PSN Fortnite with, that Epic account is now locked down by Sony and won’t work on the other consoles. So someone who owns a PS4 and plays Fortnite and then get a Switch. They try to transfer their Epic account over, they can’t. Someone who has spent $300 on PC buying cosmetics logs onto PS4 Fortnite one time for a promotional skin, their account is now locked to PS4 for consoles.

This is what the big stink was recently, not crossplay. This is shadier and shittier than saying no thanks to crossplay.
