Since this is my first in the series someone recommend me to use the long sword and I beat the game with that.In post game and tempered monsters I switched to the Hunter horn (that weapon is beast if you know what you're doing). When I reached the tempered elders I switched up again and used the gunlance.I tried the switch blade but that weapon is unbelievably hard to get used to.

I haven't given the Hunter Horn a go but have noticed how much better the SOS party does  when someone has it.

It really works well in multiplayer.Attack and defense up and Tempered elders goes down in 10mins max.

Funnily enough the elder Wyvern states it's the least used weapon , so what's it like solo.

It's my first game in the series. I like it fine. It hasn't hooked me big time yet. I've played a sporadic 15 hours with a friend over the last 6 weeks. So far, I still like some of the MH clones I've played in the past more than MHW. Since I've started, I've had more fun with Counterspy ( yes :), and the Ratchet And Clank 2016 reboot. It feels cluttered to me. Probably in part because my playtime has been so spaced out. There's a lot to learn, and I sometimes feel a bit lost when I return to it. I was still getting tutorial popups the last time I played. Can't say that's ever happened to me 15 hours into a game prior to this.

I haven't played in awhile, but I mostly went for Exploit weakness and Earplugs, both were absolutely necessary for optimal dps. More defensive options like evade extender, defense, and evade window are nice.

I usually have dragon king eye patch for weakness exploit 2,   bazel vambraces for critical draw 2 and lvl 1 earplugs baz coil earplugs lv2  hm mail lv 2 earplugs  barroth greaves stun res lv2 and marathon for jewels sharp , protection, brace ,steadfast , crisis like most it is one of about 10 loadouts it gives me baz protection, stun protect protective polish flinch free lv1 resucitate very handy I also like to have plenty of slots if I can.

I actually started playing again and noticed my gear is a lot worse than I thought. Still, had to kill teostra and got his coil for weakness exploit 2, and dropped the weakness exploit necklace/charm thing for just attack.  It's a little annoying that my main weapon is the HR rathalos one which is fire elemental, so I just been using something that a lot of monsters are strong against. Was wondering if any of the newer weapons were any good.

Solo is a bit more challenging because there's no one else for the Monster to focus on,unless you're an expert with the weapon. For me solo is no prob since I'm very good with it,I play notes and beat the shit out of the monster at the same time.

People play it less because they make the mistake of thinking it's "just" a support weapon but it's an absolute beast.I will even go as far as saying  the Devil Jho hunter horn is the second most powerful weapon in the game, only behind the Diablos Charge blade.

I can't fully answer your question mainly because I haven't experimented enough, for teostra and lunastra I found the Legia Frostreaver pretty good with it's white sharpness and ice element matching their  3 star weakness but that's pretty specific and it took me 12 legiana captures one after the other to get the  gem to make it .

My go to weapons so far with 3 or 4 to get are nergal gash dragon -high seal , perfected alloy axe 2 poison and occasionally teostra arx  blast and now legia frostreaver . I used motor chopper - fire against kirin but found I did more damage with teostra arx even though fire has an extra star.

I will definitely give it a go, it sounds like being proficient with it whether or not it's your priority weapon would give you great versatility.

Legiana would be easy to farm with rathalos SA. I think I already killed 5+ of them before, but I am unsure if I got the gem. Regardless I am pretty lucky with the gems as I got 2 Teostra gems already, but maybe that is because I keep breaking his head. I was just wondering if the new monsters were even worth killing for a new SA. Will farm a bit more to find out I suppose.

Yep the farming wasn't hard did the double quest  with legiana and odogaron using perfected alloy and it's poison ripped them a new one .it was getting the gem to drop even with using the  vouchers and breaking every part so my luck took it's time.

Just solo'd the wind/crystal dragon after farming Negregante for no good reason at all as the armor is subpar compared to my maxed out bone armour, with even resists just can't be beaten at the moment. Anyway, at 300 defence and no wind charm the latter half of that fight was sweat inducing. Got three feeds in and wasted all the good stuff in my item box. ...never again. Infact I think I might be done with the game.

The wind charm wouldn't have helped against Kushala Daora wind proof doesn't affect it's wind barrier as for armor I can't go past mixing and matching  , i would recommend going on to me Kushala is the worst dragon.
