Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How could Nintendo implement a Switch Pro?

I would like to see a larger, higher resolution screen in the device itself though, even if games aren't fully leveraging it. - 720P @ 6.2" isn't exactly trend setting.

1080P @ 8-10" would be amazing.

You seem to be the most knowledgeable about these things so i figured i would ask you

Could a Tegra X2 potentially be used for both a Switch Mini/Portable and a Switch Pro/XL?

Something like a Vita sized version with the same performance as the current model and a moderately more powerful version with a 1080p screen?

I was pondering this in another thread earlier today. The thing is though, do they actually need to? Is there an audience for the third party games and would it matter to first party development the rest of this gen. Hmm. I don't think the endeavour would be worth it for them.

The primary goal of a Switch Pro would not be to bring over more third party games, just as this was not the goal for the DSi or the New 3DS. It would mostly be to get existing owners to double dip or to grab new consumers by making the system seem shiny and new again.

If I were them I would prioritize a cheaper handheld-only Switch and a TV-only Switch to compliment the current Switch and offer more choices to people (not to mention it would also replace the cheaper 3DS/2DS line) first before working on a Switch "Pro".

On the other hand, an eventual mid-generation upgrade can help extend the life of a platform. We have not only seen this with PS4 Pro and Xbox One X but also with Nintendo handheld revisions like GameBoy Color, DSi/DSi XL, New 3DS/New 3DS XL/New 2DS XL. I think being, for example, able to run handheld mode games at the same level as the current docked-mode and docked-mode games with better performance would be a pretty good reason to upgrade (not to mention Nintendo typically throughs some other quality of life stuff in with their revisions usually) for existing users.

On the topic of the audience for third-parties on Switch, I think there is clearly an audience (I think its important to note that just because some games do not sell as well on the Switch as other platforms does not mean there is no audience for third-party titles overall on Switch). Maybe not with regards to Western AAA games so much, but there are quite a number of indie and Japanese developers that could benefit from this. There are number of Japanese devs, for example, that have taken advantage of the additional processing power in the New 3DS (not to mention this applies to Nintendo themselves as well). I should mention that for third-parties a hypothetical Switch Pro would likely not increase support, but it would allow existing supporters to make better performing versions; and overall it helps keeps the platform relevant for longer and hence their games (not to mention first-party as well) will sell for longer.

Most certainly!
The Tegra X2 can offer a fairly significant increase in power savings at the same performance level as Tegra X1, which means a chunk of the battery size could be shaved off to reduce the overall systems size for a Switch Mini.

Or... Nintendo could take it in the opposite direction and offer a significant increase in performance for the same power draw. I.E. Switch Pro/XL.

Modern displays tend to be significantly higher resolution/higher pixel density and more power efficient than the Switch's display, Nintendo "cheaped out" on the Switch's display sadly.
But that also means there is a potentially larger room for improvement in an iterative console release... And that is something I look forward to potentially seeing.

Switch Pro (or Switch 2 before the time) it's necessary. The two most important things to improve on the hardware level are greater computing power and a much larger storage memory. The only thing they have to do it's mantain the compatibility with all the accessories like Joy-con, Pro controller, Dock station ecc... cause they cost way too much. It's kind of absurd to see game at 480p or lower in some cases in handheld mode or sub HD in dock mode.

If Nintendo relly makes Switch Pro/XL or even more likly Switch Mini/Pocket, it want beacuse of 3rd parties, but because they want to offer difrent price point for Switch platform, same like they done that with DS and 3DS. But 3rd party games would benefit for increased performance and resolution with potential Switch Pro/XL.

How potential Switch revisions could IMO look with Tegra X2:

-Switch Pro/XL: display 6.2"-8" (I think there are minimal chanches for bigger display than 8" because it would be too big espacily with Yoy Cons attached), 1080p resolution, similar battery life to current model, curent docked Switch GPU/CPU clocks in portable mode, higher GPU/CPU clocks for docked mode, around $50-100 more expansive than base Switch.

-Switch Mini/Pocket: around 5" display, 720p resolution, only for handheld play, without detachable Joy Cons-dock-TV support, much better battery life than current model (around 5 hours), current portable GPU/CPU clocks, around $70-100 cheaper than base model.

Also there is point what new base model will be, current model will definitely be replaced with revision same like New 3DS replaced base with 3DS model, so if that base model will have same or different clocks and different price point.

Not revising the Switch would be a huge missed opportunity, alongside with price cuts and killer app software, hardware revisions can be one of the most effective ways to re-energize a system's sales.

Dock: $89
Dock+: $149. TX1 (overclocked/no underclock) in a dock for better home console performance (stealth dedicated home console).
Dock++: $229. TX2 (overclocked/no underclock) in a dock for much better home console performance. 2nd home console.

Tablet: ~$130-$150 (after ~$50 price cut)
Tablet+:~$200. TX2 tablet with same form factor, better battery life, improved docked performance (or same form factor, same battery life, improved undocked and docked performance)

Switch Mini: $300. Smaller form factor, TV-out cradle instead of dock.
Switch: $250
Switch Pro (TX2):$300

Switch owners get a second (dedicated) home console + better home console graphics for ~$99-$179 by trading in the standard dock allowing the current Switch to be used as dedicated portable.
Switch owners get an improved TX2 Switch for $70-$100 after trading the standard tablet or keep it and allow the current Switch to be used as a dedicated home console.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Guys. Hey Guys. This device is called the "Nintendo Switch". What makes you think Nintendo is interested in selling a version without detachable joycons that make that grating "snap" noise every time they're attached? It's the whole schtick of the console. I also think it's pretty laughable that anyone thinks Nintendo is going to make a Switch even bigger than the current Switch. I think everything you'll ever see from the Switch line is going to revolve around those joycons.
