I think for a site that is all about running the numbers many of us have brought emotion to this thread and discarded our trusted calculators. First these two content packs will be profitable for Microsoft. they need only sell 1.66 million units for each pack to break even were they to charge fifteen dollars. All they need to sell this to is ten percent of their install base. Which is entirely possible and plausible. Especially since the current install base will be two million stronger by the time the first pack arrives.

Beyond that Microsoft has nothing to exploit with details. Two major problems have developed on the console over the last few months. The first problem is production difficulties. Ideally Microsoft should have three to four million consoles available to exploit the demand and have remainder units to replenish shelves. Realistically they have a million units available for launch month. Sales will increase based upon competitive pricing alone. Microsoft really takes a hit for being overly successful during the holidays, and for having manufacturing woes. Frankly it was a major catastrophe. Especially considering they have placed so much effort and faith in this title.

The second problem is titles slipping towards the back end of the calendar. Which creates a greater advertising opportunity in the last four months of the year then they would otherwise enjoy now. They cannot even exploit a greater trend from Grand Theft Auto. There next major title being Ninja Gaiden, but beyond that it is shaping up to be a dull summer. Too many titles have picked up stakes and slipped into the fall. They may be better off saving advertising revenue.

One might suspect that they might even gather up a month with four major game releases. Perhaps September could see a Fable 2, Too Human, Alan Wake, and Left 4 Dead. Which would be more effective advertising the hell out of a game for multiple platforms which you cannot fully exploit, or splitting those kind of resources on four games in the space of a month.

I expect Microsoft to advertise Grand Theft Auto, but when it comes to their extra content packages. I would fully expect them to advertise them when the packages hit later this year along with what should be a powerful short term lineup. Not only would it be more exploitable when it came to holiday shoppers, but it could help to generate a stronger overall impression.

Looking into my crystal ball I see the 360 being sold out in a month. Everyone will talk about it like its a revelation, but the irony is that Microsoft will do this without the massive advertising campaign many posters think they need. The reality most will realize is that Microsoft was in no position to exploit this title regardless. To those hanging on the fence my best advice is to buy now and not find yourself pissed off that you cannot get one.

I can say it Microsoft really screwed up on this one. They will not lose this war on the advertising front. They will lose it on the factory floor. A painful lesson to not underestimate yourself.

To the best of my knowledge they can only sell the DLC pack to those people that bought GTAIV and that won't be 100% of their user base.

Lets say 4 million people buy GTA 4 on the 360, they would need to sell the DLC to almost half of them, that seem like a lot to me....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

i don't get it, why are all those commercials irish?

You're too much of a pessimist Gebx, need to be more postive :)

I'll attempt to look at this objectively using statistics and another shining example of DLC in the form of Rock Band. As of March, there had been 6 million songs bought via DLC for Rock Band according to Harmonix. No mention is made as to how many were fo reach system, but let's split it the same as the software sales splits go, so about 5/2 360/PS3 ratio. This puts MS at about 4,300,000 songs sold for the 360 version. Now, let's take a couple different hypotheticals, since we don't know exactly how many unique users it is.

First, let's say that number is from an average of 20 songs per person. (An estimation I'd say is quite high.) In that case, it would mean there have been about 200k users actively downloading new content, or about 16-17% of the install base.

If you move it to an average of 15 songs per buyer, then the number of users creeps closer to 300k, or about 25% of the install base.

If the average is more like 10 songs per peson downloading, then you've got 400k people, or 30-33% that download.

So, even in the lowest scenario, percentage-wise, that leaves 1 in 6 buyers that actively download content. If I had to guess, I'd guess the more realistic ones would probably be closer to the 20-25% range. That's not a terrible percentage of people aware of the availability of DLC. Given that Rock Band is what I'd consider more of a "casual" game than GTA, I'd guess the more "hardcore" gamers buying GTA would be even more aware of its availability. To think, as some have insinuated, that it would only move a hundred thousand units or so, would basically mean that it only sold half a million copies, which even the most undying Sony fan would have to admit is a ridiculous propostition.

The 360 version will likely outdistance the PS3 version's sales. Not because of DLC, but because of its increased install base in North America and the rest of the world outside Japan, where GTA is a non-factor. The game is a few weeks away, and the DLC is still months beyond that, so ths still has a long way to go before it really plays itself out.

The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.

i enjoy this website for the stats and everything but often i will see if anyone has news in these forums and ive seen so many ps3 fanboys that i felt the need to respond. I've seen at least 1 million xbox failed PS3 on the rise again and misinformation spat out left and right in an effort to purposely blind yourselfs or perhaps only see the light in the darkness,

I heard that the DLC will be big btw let me side track for a second someone brought up oblivion earlier and mentiond no1 like DLC or something... the Shivering isles was better than oblivion and it was greatly anticipated by a lot of people and GTA is 100x more popular... to think it wont sell is just ignorance...

obviously none of you have a 360 because people buy arcade games that are free and you dont think theyr going to buy a GTA expansion?

pretty much every fanboy prediction i have read is greatly stretched in favor of PS3, and ALSO i heard MS didnt give them money like a lot of people want to believe (like microsoft doesnt have money anyway give me a break) they loaned it to Rockstar confident it would make profit but if it does not they get their investment back... yaaa makes sense now dont it ?

rockstar has  a better track record with sony? really? because they made games on the ps2? thats the basis? Yet take-two interactive has a better track record on 360.. go ahead look it up and BTW once EA buys Take-two no1 will ever have to worry about rockstar exclusivity ever again.

back to the DLC it will be big, it will be on 360 exclusively... go ahead 'speculate' that it will come to ps3 just like Bioshock, mass effect, and gears of war have come to ps3..

oh by the way i heard the ps3 is having hardware failure and that it causes a high readin of radiation and releases a lot of green house gasses.
