Forums - Politics Discussion - U.S. withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Some of the responses in this thread actually scares me.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I thought this was an especially valuable post and wanted to formally thank you for offering it. And also wanted to highlight it again so that hopefully more people will take the time to read this unique perspective. Thank you for offering this input!

No problem and thanks.

Good. We should pull out of the UN entirely. But it is nice to see Nikki Haley wear their asses out from time to time. That’s our first female President!

Good, let them pull out of the UN as well /s. Don need crazy people like Lying Haley to veto against rational ideas and progress.

Beginning to lose all hope for this country. So much negative energy it’s frightening. Curious how much more Americans will endure until they rise against it.

And I agree...some responses in here are scary stuff.

Who would’ve thought the US would go down the drain in direction of Russia so fast?

Between the USA leaving the Paris climate accords, a trade war with China and the EU, our inhumane policies in regards to immigration, leaving the human rights council and the death of net neutrality. I really fail to understand how anyone is happy with the current state of American politics. Who even benefits from any of this? At least for something like a tax cut I can say "I don't agree with it but I can understand why someone would want this" but with a lot of the controversies surrounding trump I'm just baffled as to how anyone can say we are better off as a nation.

Exactly. And it's not even just that in my mind. We're not even 18 months into Trump's tenure and already this is the state of affairs. Where will be by the THEORETICAL end of Trump's tenure in 2025? (I say theoretical because I observe an exceptionally low level of respect for the rule of law on the part of the current administration.) Will we still be in the UN at all, for example? What legal protections will we have left? I mean I find that leaders who want to isolate their country from the rest of the world tend to have reasons for wanting to.

If we're willing to set up concentration camps for asylum seekers and their toddlers, does that program necessarily end with that group, or will it be just the first and most obvious? What other groups might be targeted by the end of another 6 and a half years? Oh say political dissidents in general, maybe?

I never buy for a second the reassurances people often offer me that "that can't happen here". It most certainly can, folks, and this growing list of isolationist policies should set off alarm bells in that connection.

I love coming into this thread and reading peoples posts.

Always brings a smile to my face. It's like watching the newscasters on election night when they came to the realization as to who won. Good times.

They can't even do the very job they were created to do. They don't actually prevent wars from happening. In my opinion, the US should stop founding the organization altogether.

You know why the UN isn't working ? Because it isn't a "world government", they can only suggest to do things but can't force it, because it isn't the main purpose of the UN. And the USA is one of the first countries which don't give a crap about the UN.

Yes, the purpose of the UN is to be a forum where issues can be hashed out by nations in order to resolve conflicts. Much like the League of Nations, the original intent of the UN was so nations could avoid forming military alliances which is the reason why the two world wars became world wars. This immediately failed because not too long after the UN's birth we got NATO and the Warsaw Pact. However, the UN is given certain powers through votes and actually is capable of defending certain policies that are internationally agreed on. For example, after former President Obama destroyed Libya, a bunch religious fanatics took over the country and a black market slave trade had formed. You were able to but your own slave for as little as $400. The UN actually could have done some something about this. What did they do when the news broke about the slave trade? They decided to have a general assembly meeting on the topic of cultural appropriation. I kid you not.

Also, the US does give a shit about the UN. We're a permanent member of the Security Council and have veto powers. Also, the US pays the largest share of the UN's bills. So there's actually a lot that happens in the UN that couldn't happen without the US.

Also, I would hate to double post, but do any of you realize that what is happening right now isn't new? You do know that, right? Former President Obama was doing the same thing back in either 2014 or 2015. The reason Obama started doing it was because there were an alarming number of reports that a lot of children coming across the border illegally were children who had been abducted by human traffickers. Before this, the law which currently allows this was originally passed in the late 1990s. Both the Bush and Obama administrations added to this law. Currently, President Trump wants Congress to recite or revise the law. Many of them don't want to do this because doing so would give Trump the funding for his wall.

So that's it. Trump wants his wall. The Republicans are spineless. The Democrats actually want to ride this out because they're hoping this will help them gain a few seats in the House and Senate in the upcoming mid term elections. If Libertarians had been in power, they would have ended the drug war which is the root cause of a lot of this mess.

Politifact rates your claim as "False".

A sobering reminder that we have no power over our governments and they will do as they please, and we'd better hope it's not against us.
